Alain Jaume, Cairanne, Les Travees 2023

Cairanne is one of the Southern Rhône’s rising stars, nestled among some of the region’s most celebrated villages. Sharing its sun-drenched terroir with nearby Rasteau, Gigondas, and... Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cairanne offers exceptional value for lovers of classic Grenache-led blends. Les Travées from Alain Jaume highlights the appellation’s potential, with grapes grown on limestone-rich slopes at elevations up to 350 metres. This higher altitude adds freshness and structure to the wine, while the Mediterranean climate ensures full ripeness and depth of flavour. In the glass, it presents a deep garnet-red colour with expressive aromas of fresh red and black fruits. The palate is rich and fleshy, supported by well-integrated tannins. The finish is long and textured, showing classic notes of spice, menthol, and dark chocolate that echo the warmth and complexity of its Rhône Valley roots. Fermented and aged in concrete vats for 12 to 14 months, this vintage retains purity and precision. Drink now or cellar for up to six years.

BOSS II, Toscana Rosso 2022

This property is an incredible find. It sits in amongst the Chianti Rufina consortium and lucky for us - is not registered as such, it is therefore listed at the most remarkable price point. Head... over to Majestic and see Chianti Rufina wines listed from £20+ per bottle. Chianti Rufina is one of the most prestigious and age-worthy Chiantis. Rufina wines often have more elegance and aging potential and is historically considered one of the most significant in Tuscany. This has been aged in French oak for 24 months and 18 months in bottle and is also therefore considered a Riserva. This Toscana Rosso blend of Sangiovese (80%) and Merlot (20%) giving the blend gorgeous rich and dark fruit with that merlot soft velvety texture. I have ordered myself in large quantities - it has power, spice, freshness and bags of fruit and is wonderfully harmonious after time spent in oak and bottle, the 2022 is perfect to enjoy now. It doesn't get better in terms of value for money. Tasting notes - Chianti Rufina comes from cooler hillside vineyards northeast of Florence at the foot of the Apennines, which gives the wine incredible freshness and structure. Made mostly from Sangiovese, it has beautiful cherry, violet, and spice notes with vibrant acidity and the merlot gives it a richness and velvety texture. This is classic refined and elegant Tuscany with body and spice, the 2022 is perfect now and an exceptional food wine. 13.5%

Carmes de Rieussec, Sauternes 2018

As the second wine of Château Rieussec, Carmes de Rieussec 2018 embodies the elegance of Sauternes with a harmonious balance of richness and freshness. Crafted from Sémillon (89%), Muscadelle (6%),... and Sauvignon Blanc (5%), this vintage benefits from noble rot, enhancing its depth and complexity. Aged for 12 months in barrels, it reveals aromas of apricot, candied melon, and subtle oak influence, leading to a silky palate with citrus and spice layers. The finish is long, honeyed, and well-defined, promising further development over the years. Acclaimed by Lisa Perrotti-Brown (The Wine Advocate), who describes it as: "Pale lemon-gold colored, the 2018 Carmes de Rieussec is a little youthfully mute to begin, offering glimpses at lemon meringue pie, lime cordial, and beeswax scents with touches of baking bread and marzipan. The palate is appealingly rich and packed with citrus and spice layers, finishing long and honeyed." Perfectly paired with blue cheese, fruity desserts, or enjoyed on its own, this Sauternes is best served chilled at 8–10°C to showcase its refined complexity

Carruades de Lafite, Pauillac 2023 6x75cl

Carruades , one of the most sought-after wines every year has just been released. It is the second wine of Ch Lafite Rothschild, and has been released at £930.00 per 6x75cl, a price reduction of... 19% on the 2022 vintage. It is one of the best recent vintages of Carruades and at this price it will be one of the top performers among the 2023’s you buy. Simply put -it is investment Gold Dust, largely due to its particularly strong following in the Asian market. Carruades is in reality much more than you could ask of a second wine, with its own personality, yet made providing a glimpse of what makes Lafite the global success which it is. 2023 sees the inclusion of grapes from the ‘Caudeyrac’ plot, a prominent portion of the Lafite plateau, which has given Carruades a more Pauillac personality than ever before this year. "A savory and juicy Carruades with softness and notes of ripe berry, cedar and dried tobacco. Like Lafite from the 1980s but more precise. Round and pretty. It really grows on the finish with such sweetness of fruit and length. Pointed, fine tannins at the end. Very long. A blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot." 95-96 points, James Suckling "Medium intensity ruby, fairly austere right now, structured, with the same mint leaf and ink quality as Lafite. The sweet brambled black fruits only come in through the mid palate, this is well paced, unrolls slowly, a serious and concentrated Carruades that has its eye on the future. 12% pres wine, harvest September 7 to 29, unusually only using Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend." 94 points, Jane Anson "The 2023 Carruades de Lafite is a very pretty, sensual wine that very much captures the personality of the Grand Vin, naturally in a more approachable style. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with no Franc or Petit Verdot. I have to say, there is something very direct about the 2023—something frank that is really evident. I admire its purity. Succulent red plum, spice, cedar, tobacco and a lifting touch of white pepper open first, while beautifully persistent saline undertones extend the finish." 92-94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous "The 2023 Carruades de Lafite is deep garnet-purple in color. After a swirl or two, a beautiful perfume of rose oil and lavender is released, opening out to a classic core of cassis, fresh plums, and pencil lead with a touch of red, iron-rich soil. The light to medium-bodied palate is delicately styled, with compelling vibrancy and nice, ripe, fine-grained tannins supporting the black fruits, finishing long and fragrant. This is very pretty! The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with pH 3.70. The alcohol is 13.2%." 92-94 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW "The 2023 Carruades de Lafite is notable for some of the Cabernet being picked prior to the Merlot, between September 7 and 29. This year, there is no Cabernet Franc or Petit Verdot in the blend. It has a far superior bouquet to some of the vintages I was tasting a decade or so ago—much more purity and precision, with notes of black plum, wild strawberry and a touch of cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky texture and a crisp line of acidity. It’s fresh, precise and saline, with a long tail on the finish. This is surely one of the best Carruades I have tasted at this stage." 91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

A solid Cru Bourgeois. Drink 2026 - 2036" 90 points, Panos Kakaviatos, Decanter

Chateau Berliquet Grand Cru Classe, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023 12x75cl

Chateau Berliquet 2003 has just been released to considerable and growing critical acclaim, Purchased by Chanel in 2017 it is part of their now legendary triumvirate along with Chateau Canon &... Rauzan Segla all under superstar winemaker and manager Nicholas Audebert. On the plateau of St Emilion with a blend of 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Franc, the wine has fragrant flavours of wild blueberries, plum preserves, and kirsch, followed by a hint of lilac – it is bright and energetic, with intense red and black berry layers and super-silky tannins, finishing with wonderful length and tension in a word delicious. It will age well and is a shrewd investment grade wine (with a release price 21% down on last year) that is sure to follow the upward trajectory of Canon & Ruzan Segla. "A blend of 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Berliquet has a pH of 3.53 and it is ageing in 10% amphorae and 90% oak barriques, of which 34% are new. It has a deep garnet-purple color and it hops from the glass with fragrant notes of wild blueberries, plum preserves, and kirsch, followed by hints of lilacs, fragrant soil, and cardamom. The medium-bodied palate is bright and energetic, with intense red and black berry layers and super-silky tannins, finishing with wonderful length and tension." 94-96 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW "A plump and juicy wine with redcurrants and plums, as well as orange peel. Full and layered with round, juicy tannins and a flavorful finish. Generous fruit in this vintage." 94-95 points, James Suckling "The 2023 Berliquet is the first vintage produced in the estate's new winery, equipped with double the number of vats, permitting proper separation of blocks. That's especially important, as Berliquet is a more diverse terroir than Canon, and it can now be interpreted with much more precision. Offering up aromas of cherries, black raspberries, licorice and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, pillowy and layered, with a fleshy core of concentrated fruit, refined, chalky tannins and lively acids." 93-95 points, William Kelley "The 2023 Berliquet was picked 23 September to October 5 at 45hL/ha, matured in 34% new oak plus 10 amphorae. Initially, the nose is quite backward and doesn't want to play. Give it a few swirls and it opens to reveal black cherries, blackcurrant and a distant tang of oyster shell emanating from limestone soils. The palate is medium-bodied with a very harmonious entry. Finely weighted, tensile and slightly savory in style, this is very elegant, finishing with citrus-like freshness. Berliquet has definitely been in the ascendant in recent vintages, and this is another to add." 93-95 points, Neal Martin

Chateau Beychevelle 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2023 6x75cl

Chateau Beychevelle 2023 has been released at £718 per case (12x75cl). making it the cheapest Beychevelle on the market and a marvellous investment grade wine with the last 5 vintages showing an... average 15% increase in value – see the graph below. It is a classic example of the benefits of buying wine ‘en primeur’ and a must buy for us all who can get some. When we tasted Beychevelle in Bordeaux last month, we were all in awe as to what a gorgeous wine it was already – all the critics agree. It is without question, one of the stars of the vintage "The 2023 Beychevelle is fabulous. As always, Beychevelle includes quite a bit more Merlot than most wines in the appellation, but the Cabernet is especially high here. Inky dark fruit, crème de cassis, mocha, licorice and lavender build in the glass. This juicy, extroverted Saint-Julien has a ton to offer. The combination of fruit intensity, acid and supporting structure is superb. The 2023 is showy, but not at all overdone. Beychevelle remains one of the most distinctive wines in all of Bordeaux. It is especially classy in this edition. Tasted two times. 2033-2063" 94-96 points, Antonio Galloni "Pure fruit to this, with blueberries, hazelnuts, walnut and blackcurrants. Just like eating grapes at this stage. It has a full body, juicy tannins and a savory finish. Remains vivid and energetic." 94-95 points, James Suckling "From a château that seems to have hit another gear over the past five to seven years, the 2023 Château Beychevelle is based on 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot, pulled from 60% of the total production, and will see 18 months in 70% new French oak. Its deep purple hue is followed by a deep, rich, medium to full-bodied Saint-Julien loaded with ripe red and blue fruits, leafy herbs, truffle, iron, and spring flowers. It's medium to full-bodied, has a remarkable sense of freshness and purity, velvety tannins, and outstanding length. The 2023 hit 13.3% alcohol with a rock-solid pH of 3.67." 93-96 points, Jeb Dunnuck “The 2023 Beychevelle has turned out especially well this year, exhibiting a more integrated, seductive style than recent vintages that were constructed in a punchier, more extracted register. Offering up aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notions of pen ink, violets and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a deep core of fruit and a classy, suave profile that foregrounds the estate's prime vineyard holdings on the plateau around Ducru-Beaucaillou. It's a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot that represents 50% of the estate's production.” 93-94 points, William Kelley "The 2023 Beychevelle was picked from September 13 through October 6 over 17 days of harvest, partly because of the size of the crop and not having to rush. It has the highest proportion of Merlot under winemaker Philippe Blanc (35%), and it matured in 70% new oak. This has a notably floral and tightly-knit bouquet, leaning a little more toward blue fruit than other Saint-Julien wines tasted from barrel. The oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannins that impart a sense of linearity. Very saline, this is a saliva-inducing Beychevelle, lightly spiced with a structured, almost Pauillac-like finish. Excellent." 92-94 points, Neal Martin

Chateau Canon Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023 6x75cl

Château Canon 2023 is one of ‘the great Canon vintages ‘ with two potential 100-point scores and universal praise from the critics and at 25% less than last year, it is a compelling buy and very... reasonably priced. The demand for Canon is now enormous and our allocation relatively modest. The Canon story is now part of St Emillion legend since it was bought by Chanel 12 years ago. They invested heavily in the vineyard and appointed the hugely talented Nicholas Audebert as their winemaker – he was recognised within a few years as Bordeaux’ no 1 winemaker as Canon established itself as one of the top St Émilions whose reputation grows with every vintage. This is a wine we should all be following. "This is so elegant and sophisticated already, with a really electric presence and length that goes on and on. It's medium- to full-bodied with an intensity of tannins. It remains weightless and energetic. The pH is 3.41, making this a vivid and lively wine. Currant, orange and stone. Sea salt, too. The limestone soils created a unique wine here in 2023. A blend of 71% merlot and 29% cabernet franc." 99-100 points, James Suckling "A blend of 71% Merlot and 29% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Canon has a pH of 3.42 and it will age in barriques for 16-18 months, of which 50% are new. It is deep garnet-purple in color and sails out of the glass with bold notions of juicy blueberries, fresh plums, and Bing cherries, giving way to hints of black pepper, fragrant soil, and violets. The medium to full-bodied palate shimmers with energetic black and blue fruits, framed by super-satiny tannins and compelling tension, finishing long and fragrant. Absolutely ethereal!" 98-100 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW "Wafting from the glass with aromas of mulberries and raspberries mingled with spices, rose petals, licorice and violets, the 2023 Canon is another brilliant wine from a property whose excellence can almost be taken for granted. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's seamless and concentrated, its vibrant core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins and girdled by lively acids, concluding with a long, mineral finish." 96-98 points, William Kelley "Finesse and saline limestone character on full display, spiced plum, textural as ever, with finely boned architecture, in the line of great Canon vintages, with density to the black fruits and the mouthwateringly precise tannic grip and oyster shell salinity. 50% new oak for ageing, harvest September 6 through to October 4 (with Merlot going right through until the end, unlike many places, here they really waited). 45hl/ha yield, in organic conversion. Tasted twice." 96 points, Jane Anson "The 2023 Canon was picked from around 6 September to 6 October at 45hL/ha and matured in 50% new oak. It has a perfumed bouquet with pure black cherries and touches of cassis and violet. The oak is beautifully integrated. Perhaps if I have to quibble, it is not quite as complex as the very best recent vintages, but that's a high bar nowadays. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black cherry fruit laced with iodine, and veins of blue fruit. There is a sorbet-like freshness embroidered throughout this Canon, and it delivers a lovely cracked black pepper note on the finish. Excellent. Again." 94-96 points, Neal Martin "A wine of classicism and reserve, the 2023 Canon is less overtly expressive than most recent vintages, keeping much of its personality in reserve. Nevertheless, I watched it grow considerably over the two weeks I spent in Bordeaux. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, mint and spice are some of the many notes that open in the glass. It is a wine that marries generous fruit with classical rigor. I won't be surprised if it shows even better with time. Tasted four times. 2033-2063" 94-96 points, Antonio Galloni The 2023 is 71% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Franc from a healthy yield of 45 hl/ha. Elevage is in 50% new oak, 50% second fill from 5 coopers (Sylvain, Taransaud, Quintesance, Demptos and St Martin) and also in 3 large foudres. This is regarded by the team here as a more approachable version of the excellent 2016 produced here.

Chateau Cissac, Haut-Medoc 2023 6x75cl

Chateau Cissac 2023 is an beautifully made Cru Bourgeoise claret with commendable reviews from the critics and released at only £8.00 per bottle in bond. With a large and loyal following in the UK... it is a wine we should all be buying this year – it is one of the bargains of the vintage ‘good aromatic length, very appealing finish, a very elegant and classic Cissac style’ Markus Del Monego MW ‘A good vintage at this estate’ Jane Anson Intense purple colour with violet hue. Very elegant and expressive nose, very pure fruit, blackcurrants and blackberries, hints of raspberries in the background and discreet toasting. A whiff of vanilla and discreet floral hints in the background. On the palate well-structured with balanced tannins, good aromatic length, very appealing finish, a very elegant and classic Cissac style, however interpreted in a contemporary way. 92 Points Markus Del Monego MW A good vintage at this estate, with vibrant red cherry and damson fruit, a good dollop of black pepper spice and fresh floral aromatics. It's a little austere but it's juicy and has sinewy tannins that suggest ageing ability. A success, with personality and a pretty feel. Owner Marie Vialard. 91 Points Jane Anson With vines near the Gironde Estuary far north in the Médoc, a textbook example of success from cooler Left Bank terroir in this vintage, with bright and brambly cassis and plum, delivered in a straightforward fashion. I like the mid-palate concentration and depth, although the finish is marked by somewhat strict tannins. In this case, barrel ageing in 25% new oak should smoothe such edges. 91 Points Decanter

Chateau Cissac, Haut-Medoc 1998

The 1998 Château Cissac is an excellent vintage claret, known for its ability to age well. This wine has a deep color and strong legs, indicating its quality. Chateau Coutet Premier Cru Classe, Barsac 2020

Château Coutet Premier Cru Classé, Barsac 2020 is one of the benchmark sweet wines of Bordeaux and a leading name within the appellation. As a Premier Cru Classé, Coutet is widely regarded as... being in the very top tier of Bordeaux sweet wines, standing comfortably alongside estates such as Château Rieussec in terms of quality, consistency and ageing potential. The 2020 vintage captures the estate at a particularly high level. The wine offers depth and concentration without heaviness, combining ripe botrytised fruit with the natural freshness that defines great Barsac. Aromas of honeyed apricot, quince and citrus peel lead into a layered palate of candied orange, stone fruit and subtle spice, all lifted by vibrant acidity. This balance between richness and precision is the hallmark of Château Coutet. In 75cl format, this is the classic expression of the wine and the ideal choice for cellaring. The structure and concentration of the 2020 suggest a long and graceful evolution ahead, with the wine set to gain complexity and nuance over many decades in bottle. Wonderful now though and can be kept in the fridge for a week after opening. An outstanding partner to foie gras, blue cheeses or refined desserts, but equally compelling enjoyed on its own. This is a serious, age worthy Barsac and a clear illustration of why Château Coutet remains one of the finest sweet wine producers in Bordeaux.

Chateau Coutet Premier Cru Classe, Barsac 2023 3x75cl

Chateau Coutet 2023. 1er Grand Cru Barsac comes from one of the finest Estates in Barsac/Sauternes and besides being modestly priced and delicious it also performs well as an investment grade wine... (see below) We tasted the 2023 at Mouton Rothschild last month – it was gorgeous with wonderful aromatics of summer fruits and a tough of spice. We all agreed that this will probably be the only Sauternes we will be offering – it was that good! "Beautiful aromatics, fresh acidity that picks things up from the first moment, crisp citrus, mango, pineapple, grated ginger, and a twist of bitter aniseed on the finish. Richly concentrated, reflecting small yields, but once again a wine that shows the huge potential of this style in the 2023 vintage. Harvest between September 20 and October 11." 96 points, Jane Anson "A Barsac with dried-apple, apricot and spice character. The botrytis comes through with a healthy and clean nature to it. Medium-bodied and medium-sweet with a spicy finish." 94-95 points, James Suckling "The 2023 Coutet is stellar. Soaring aromatics and bright acids drive through a core of lemon confit, apricot, mint, spice, passion fruit and pineapple. The interplay of deep, layered flavors and energy is so compelling. 2028-2048" 93-95 points, Antonio Galloni

Since 2010 Pauline Bich Chandon-Moët and her husband Philippe have invested substantially to bring Château de Ferrand firmly into the 21st century, with important and design-led technical changes in the winery, environmental changes with organic practices being implemented in the vineyard (and also many architectural and artistic renovations). The 2022 vintage is the estate's second vintage in its three-year conversion to organic certification; they hope to be fully certified by 2024. In 2019 new cellars were opened along with renowned consultant Axel Marchal coming on board and following a study of the soils and subsoils, the entire vineyard has been restructured through a rigorous selection of grape varieties according to their ability to adapt to the terroir of each plot and this meticulous attention to detail shows! Chateau Lafite Rothschild Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac 2005 6x75cl

Small special parcel of the excellent 2005 vintage by the Chateau where it has been aging gently in their cellars for the last 18+ years and will be in perfect condition with new labels and wooden... cases. This adds considerable value to the wine as it also guarantees its provenance. 2005 was one of the great vintages in Bordeaux and especially at Chateau Lafite where it was lauded by the critics with exceptional scores. ‘Absolutely marvellous wine…truly glorious’ – 19.5/20 Jancis Robinson ‘The palate has such freshness and density, with perfectly polished tannins. Slightly leathery, like a wonderful Hermes bag’ - 100 points James Suckling. “An incredible nose, so subtle with red fruits, mint, minerals, and all sorts of flowers give way to Cohiba cigar tobacco. The palate has such freshness and density, with perfectly polished tannins. Slightly leathery, like a wonderful Hermes bag” 100 points. James Suckling For the third year in a row, Bordeaux experienced drought. In other words, not a drop of rain from May to October. As always, however, our good vines, faithful and strong, adapted and overcame these difficult moments. The summer temperatures remained reasonable, and ripening was slow, calm and very complete. The grapes remained small and concentrated. Small quantities, high degrees, a perfect state of health. The most demanding of winegrowers was content. A famously perfect year throughout the growing season. This was the star of the tasting for pure, inherent quality - a truly glorious wine that will presumably continue to impress those lucky enough to taste it for many decades to come. Very dark, shaded crimson. The most gorgeous panoply of aromas on the nose - not yet knit but just starting to integrate. Exceptionally promising. Absolutely marvellous wine that was extremely difficult to spit. Fresh but ripe with great life and energy. The density of fruit covered the considerable charge of tannin. Such verve! So healthy. Some pure stoniness on the mid palate. 19.5/20 Jancis Robinson “Waves of saffron, truffle, black tea and earth set the pace for a remarkably balanced and aromatically-complex wine. This is still a baby at 17 years old, but has reached the level of Lafite character when all is elegance and finesse - the perfect example of how in Bordeaux they don't need excess to deliver something extraordinary. As things relax, you get a luscious, more concentrated core of cassis and bilberry fruit, with cedar, charcoal, violet, raspberry leaf and slate. Fine tannins hold it all in place, you could give this a long carafe to drink now, but the real magic needs another decade or so. Charles Chevallier technical director, and this was the last year with Emile Peynaud as consultant, before Jacques Boissenot took over in 2006. A pair of scales was chosen to decorate the bottle neck to reflect the balance of the vintage”. 98 points Jane Anson -

Chateau Lafont Menaut, Blanc, Pessac-Leognan 2023

From Pessac-Léognan, where some of the best dry whites in Bordeaux are made, this is a lovely example from a very good vintage. Lafont Menaut Blanc 2023 is fresh, characterful and well-balanced,... with enough depth to enjoy now but also the structure to age for up to 10 years. "A great value estate that I recommend to friends if they want to capture what makes Pessac whites stand out from, for example, Graves or Entre deux Mers. Has grip and charm, a little dip in the mid palate perhaps, but comes back strongly with white pear, spiced citrus and the gentle gunsmoke of the appellation. Chateau Langoa Barton 3eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2022 6x75cl

Langoa Barton has made an exceptional 2022 with scores from the critics as high as 96-97. We were all captivated by it when we tasted it in Bordeaux at the end of March; it is a brilliant Langoa... Barton. “the brilliant 2022 Langoa Barton... it should match or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages, and it is sure to be one of the more intelligent purchases of the en primeur campaign.” William Kelley Wine Advocate Château Langoa-Barton, (like its sister estate, Léoville Barton) is one of the few chateaux, out of all the 1855 Classified Growths, that is still in the hands of the same family that was the owner at the time of the 1855 classification. The estate today is run by Lillian Barton after her father, Anthony Barton, one of the Bordeaux legends sadly passed away last year. The style of Château Langoa Barton is quite different than that of Château Léoville Barton. Though both are vinified and matured in exactly the same way, a large part of that of course has to do with their vineyards and their location - the vines for Langoa Barton are due south of Leoville Barton and face the River Gironde, with north by north-west exposure. The Château Langoa-Barton blend is dominated by hand-harvested Cabernet Sauvignon, but it sees a higher proportion of Merlot than Léoville-Barton and a touch of Cabernet Franc. The gravel-rich soils and cooling waters of the Gironde contribute to its silky, elegant appeal and ability to age gracefully. A fantastic wine from an excellent vintage - a beautifully balanced classic claret displaying typical St Julien restraint and elegance and in our opinion, one of the best value Cru Classé estates... "The 2022 Langoa Barton is vibrant and focused, as the best wines are in this vintage...There's a purity to the 2022 that is impossible to miss." “Langoa could turn out to be one of the Sleepers of 2022” Antonio Galloni

Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan 2023 6x75cl

Château Carmes Haut Brion 2023 has been released and is ‘a fantastic wine’. The Château is tiny with under 8 hectares of vines and over the last 5+ years has become the new Bordeaux superstar... with everyone fighting for allocations and the wine selling out immediately. This was a Château we had to visit in April - we were all enthralled by how good the wine was with whole bunch pressed grapes and 50% Cabernet Franc in the blend – it is a wine you cannot find fault with - perfection. It is also great value at 31% less than last year. If you could only buy one this year this would probably be it - read the critics reviews!. It is also a top investment grade wine on which we all make money if we are lucky enough to be offered an allocation. "This is a fantastic wine and very, very exciting, with purity and brightness to the floral, spicy and blackberry notes. It’s full and deep with agility and weightless. You feel the greatness in this. The winemaker says this is more concentrated and structured than the 2022. Lightly salty. 60% whole-berry fermentation. 50% cabernet franc, 30% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. From organically grown grapes." 98-99 points, James Suckling "Guillaume Pouthier and his team have once again crafted one of Bordeaux's most unique and characterful wines. Revealing aromas of mulberries and raspberries mingled with notions of vine smoke, orange zest, rose petals and spices, the 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, with a powerful, vibrant and complete mid-palate, concluding with a long, ethereal and mouthwateringly saline finish. Sensual, suave and seamless, its beautifully refined tannins are, analytically, more abundant than even those of the 2022 vintage, yet they are so brilliantly integrated as to be near-imperceptible. This blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot is crafted for longevity, though its refined structure will make it surprisingly approachable at an early age. It's maturing 70% in new oak barrels, 20% in 18-hectoliter foudres and 10% in amphorae. A creditable yield of 50 hectoliters per hectare represents a decided agronomic success in what was a challenging growing season." 97-99 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate "A blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Merlot, Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2023 has a pH of 3.62. It was fermented with 60% whole bunches and it is aging in 70% new oak barrels, 20% new oak vats of 18 hl, and 10% amphorae. It has an opaque purple-black color and needs a little swirling and coaxing to bring out fabulously pure, well-defined notes of juicy black cherries, blackcurrant pastilles, ripe juicy blackberries, and licorice, leading to hints of tar, peonies, wet slate, and black olives, with a touch of Sichuan pepper. The light to medium-bodied palate is airy and refreshing, with a solid backbone of very fine-grained, prancing tannins and bold freshness supporting the pristine black fruit flavors, finishing long and minerally. I had to spend a good 15 minutes with this wine to allow it to grow: it is incredibly tight to begin but expands to become something powerful. A beguiling 2023 with fully ripe black fruit characters and a paradoxical airiness, it really makes your head spin in the best possible way!" 96-98 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW "Always a unique take on the vintage, the Carmes at this stage still shows the personality of wholebunch but it is very well integrated this year. Deep ruby in colour with blueberry, blackberry and a hint of white pepper on the nose, there is a delicate hint of szechuan spice and wood smoke. The palate is chalky, with a lick of that same sweet exotic spice set against deeply mineral fruit. Layers of blueberry, dark cherry and blackcurrant interlock with the notes of rosemary, graphite and peppercorns that define this wine. Another stellar effort, this is long, structured and yet always fleet-footed. Excellent." 95-98 points, Thomas Parker MW "The 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion was picked September 11 to 25 with 60% whole bunch and more Cabernet Franc than usual. Aging was 70% in new barrels, 20% in 18-hectoliter foudres and 10% in amphorae. This offers plenty of dark berry fruit mixed with cedar and pinecones on the nose, very well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, and the acidity is very well-judged. Just a soupçon of white pepper appears toward the finish. This is a much more succinct Les Carmes than the 2022, but it’s extremely harmonious and characterful." 94-96 points, Neal Martin "Elderflower and peony aromatics, stunning inky plum colour that is very much a signature of Carmes, where it looks so enticing and ripe visually, and then on the palate you feel this constrasting vibrant lift and drinkablity. Back to the signature squid ink flavour that is the key marker of ripe Cabernet in the vintage, and here the grippy slate texture slows everything slows, slowly humming through the palate. Has a sappy, drinkablity, with crushed rose petals and salted cracker salinity. 60% whole cluster, harvest September 11 to 25. 3.6ph. Distinctive, intense, one for Carmes lovers to celebrate." 96 points, Jane Anson "The 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is increasingly a wine of seamlessness. Whereas the various components were once easily discernible, today Carmes is most often a wine of total beauty. The 2023 is a bit shy, especially in its aromatics. In other words, a pretty big departure from so many other recent vintages that have been far showier at this stage. Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier explains that he plans to give the 2023 longer aging, around 24-26 months, so he approached vinification and the early part of aging in a more reductive style than in the past. As always, Les Carmes is marked by its strong presence of Cabernet Franc and use of whole clusters, but as mentioned above, those signatures are less immediately evident than they once were. Les Carmes has been one of Bordeaux's stars over the last few years. I can't wait to see how the 2023 turns out. 2035-2073" 94-96 points, Antonio Galloni

Chateau Lynch Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2023 6x75cl

Château Lynch Bages has made a crackingly good, highly rated 2023 down in price by 34% from last year making it the lowest priced Lynch on the market. When we all tasted it in Bordeaux at the end of... last month we were very impressed with its elegance, vibrancy and intense rich berry fruit flavours – this will be a great Lynch Bages if you are able to get some - Liv-ex again says ‘if you are lucky enough to get an allocation’… Lynch Bages has been under the stewardship of the legendary Jean-Michel Cazes who sadly died last summer, with him at the helm the Estate has become one of the leading wines of Pauillac with a global following. A tribute to a great man. "Blackberry, black cherry, crushed stone and graphite. Lead pencil, too. It’s full-bodied with juicy, chewy tannins. Vertical and layered with lovely length. Quite plush. Chewy tannins at the end. Cabernet sauvignon driven. Showing excellent potential." 97-98 points, James Suckling "A Lynch Bages that speaks more to the property's style than it does the vintage, this is a deep, shiny purple in the glass and has a powerful, black-fruit laden nose. Hints of nutmeg and liquorice come through, but the purity of cassis here is very impressive. Broad-shouldered on the palate, this is a dense, chewy vin de garde that will need at least a decade in bottle before approaching. Powerful, ripe yet never overblown, this is the essence of Pauillac, vertical, spicy and impressive. A wine with a real sense of place, this is a brilliant example of this château's unique style. Superb." 96-98 points, Thomas Parker MW "Concentrated, intense and muscular, not a word that I have used very often in 2023 Bordeaux. You get a deeply-rooted tannic grip, with soot, squid ink, cassis, blackberry, bilberry, liqourice root, slate scrap, pummice stone and mint. Lynch Bages seems to be wrought from a different place than it was a decade ago, impressive, powerful Pauillac, with an eye on long ageing. 75% new oak, Jean-Charles Cazes owner, Nicolas Labenne technical director." 96 points, Jane Anson "The 2023 Lynch-Bages is a dark, brooding wine. In so many vintages, Lynch-Bages is a wine of sensuality, but in 2023, it is quite the powerhouse. Formidable tannins wrap around a core of black fruit, spice, menthol, licorice and gravel. This is a somber, introspective Lynch-Bages with a ton of Cabernet Sauvignon character. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. 2033-2073" 94-97 points, Antonio Galloni "The 2023 Lynch-Bages takes some time to really settle, so I gave it 5-10 minutes in the glass. On the nose, glossy black fruit mixes with touches of cassis, graphite, violets and blood orange, perhaps demonstrating more horsepower than I anticipated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, saturated tannins. There is a lovely symmetry to this Pauillac (not unlike Latour), armed with a cashmere texture and plenty of backbone on the finish, even though I would not describe it as a "grippy" Lynch-Bages. There’s plenty of graphite character on the aftertaste. Excellent." 93-95 points, Neal Martin "As usual one of the chunkier, broader-shouldered wines of the Médoc, the 2023 Lynch-Bages exhibits aromas of dark berries and cassis mingled with pencil shavings, licorice and pipe tobacco, framed by creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's deep, concentrated and generously extracted, with plenty of youthfully chewy tannin to carry it along in the cellar. The 2023 is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot." 93-95 points, William Kelley

Château Maine Gazin 2023, Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux Château Maine Gazin 2023 is a well made claret from the Blaye Côtes de Bordeaux, offering a reliable and approachable style for those looking... for everyday Bordeaux with character.
