Chateau Coutet Premier Cru Classe, Barsac 2020
Château Coutet Premier Cru Classé, Barsac 2020 is one of the benchmark sweet wines of Bordeaux and a leading name within the appellation. As a Premier Cru Classé, Coutet is widely regarded as... being in the very top tier of Bordeaux sweet wines, standing comfortably alongside estates such as Château Rieussec in terms of quality, consistency and ageing potential.
The 2020 vintage captures the estate at a particularly high level. The wine offers depth and concentration without heaviness, combining ripe botrytised fruit with the natural freshness that defines great Barsac. Aromas of honeyed apricot, quince and citrus peel lead into a layered palate of candied orange, stone fruit and subtle spice, all lifted by vibrant acidity. This balance between richness and precision is the hallmark of Château Coutet.
In 75cl format, this is the classic expression of the wine and the ideal choice for cellaring. The structure and concentration of the 2020 suggest a long and graceful evolution ahead, with the wine set to gain complexity and nuance over many decades in bottle. Wonderful now though and can be kept in the fridge for a week after opening.
An outstanding partner to foie gras, blue cheeses or refined desserts, but equally compelling enjoyed on its own. This is a serious, age worthy Barsac and a clear illustration of why Château Coutet remains one of the finest sweet wine producers in Bordeaux.

Chateau Coutet Premier Cru Classe, Barsac 2019 12×37.5cl
Bouquet with scents of dried honey, honeysuckle, and orange pith. The palate is honeyed with underlying acidity, adding zestiness and a persistent finish of orange rind and marmalade with notes of... pear, ginger, and exotic fruit. It is rated 94-96 by Neal Martin of Vinous (June 2020) and is recommended to be enjoyed from 2024 to 2055.
It also has scores of 93 from Vinous and 92 from Wine Spectator.
About Chateau Coutet:
The estate, with a rich history dating back to the 13th century, is located in the Barsac appellation of the Sauternes region. It was one of the first vineyards in Sauternes, beginning wine production in 1643. The property was acknowledged by Thomas Jefferson as "the best Sauternes in Barsac."
Owned by the Baly family since 1977, Chateau Coutet is known for its luscious and elegant Sauternes. The vineyards, covering 35 hectares, are planted predominantly with Sémillon, along with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle.
The unique terroir of the region, along with the influence of noble rot (botrytis cinerea), contributes to the distinctive sweet and concentrated flavor of the wine.
2019 Vintage in Sauternes:
The 2019 vintage for Sauternes was characterized by ideal conditions for the development of botrytis, leading to richly concentrated sugar levels in the grapes. This resulted in naturally sweet wines with complex flavors.
The vinification process involved multiple picking passes, with the first starting in early October, allowing for the selection of grapes with high potential alcohol content.

Chateau Coutet Premier Cru Classe, Barsac 2023 3x75cl
Chateau Coutet 2023. 1er Grand Cru Barsac comes from one of the finest Estates in Barsac/Sauternes and besides being modestly priced and delicious it also performs well as an investment grade wine... (see below) We tasted the 2023 at Mouton Rothschild last month – it was gorgeous with wonderful aromatics of summer fruits and a tough of spice. We all agreed that this will probably be the only Sauternes we will be offering – it was that good!
"Beautiful aromatics, fresh acidity that picks things up from the first moment, crisp citrus, mango, pineapple, grated ginger, and a twist of bitter aniseed on the finish. Richly concentrated, reflecting small yields, but once again a wine that shows the huge potential of this style in the 2023 vintage. Harvest between September 20 and October 11." 96 points, Jane Anson
"A Barsac with dried-apple, apricot and spice character. The botrytis comes through with a healthy and clean nature to it. Medium-bodied and medium-sweet with a spicy finish." 94-95 points, James Suckling
"The 2023 Coutet is stellar. Soaring aromatics and bright acids drive through a core of lemon confit, apricot, mint, spice, passion fruit and pineapple. The interplay of deep, layered flavors and energy is so compelling. 2028-2048" 93-95 points, Antonio Galloni

Chateau Lafite Rothschild Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac 2005 6x75cl
Small special parcel of the excellent 2005 vintage by the Chateau where it has been aging gently in their cellars for the last 18+ years and will be in perfect condition with new labels and wooden... cases. This adds considerable value to the wine as it also guarantees its provenance.
2005 was one of the great vintages in Bordeaux and especially at Chateau Lafite where it was lauded by the critics with exceptional scores.
‘Absolutely marvellous wine…truly glorious’ – 19.5/20 Jancis Robinson
‘The palate has such freshness and density, with perfectly polished tannins. Slightly leathery, like a wonderful Hermes bag’ - 100 points James Suckling.
“An incredible nose, so subtle with red fruits, mint, minerals, and all sorts of flowers give way to Cohiba cigar tobacco. The palate has such freshness and density, with perfectly polished tannins. Slightly leathery, like a wonderful Hermes bag” 100 points. James Suckling
For the third year in a row, Bordeaux experienced drought. In other words, not a drop of rain from May to October. As always, however, our good vines, faithful and strong, adapted and overcame these difficult moments. The summer temperatures remained reasonable, and ripening was slow, calm and very complete. The grapes remained small and concentrated. Small quantities, high degrees, a perfect state of health. The most demanding of winegrowers was content. A famously perfect year throughout the growing season. This was the star of the tasting for pure, inherent quality - a truly glorious wine that will presumably continue to impress those lucky enough to taste it for many decades to come. Very dark, shaded crimson. The most gorgeous panoply of aromas on the nose - not yet knit but just starting to integrate. Exceptionally promising. Absolutely marvellous wine that was extremely difficult to spit. Fresh but ripe with great life and energy. The density of fruit covered the considerable charge of tannin. Such verve! So healthy. Some pure stoniness on the mid palate. 19.5/20 Jancis Robinson
“Waves of saffron, truffle, black tea and earth set the pace for a remarkably balanced and aromatically-complex wine. This is still a baby at 17 years old, but has reached the level of Lafite character when all is elegance and finesse - the perfect example of how in Bordeaux they don't need excess to deliver something extraordinary. As things relax, you get a luscious, more concentrated core of cassis and bilberry fruit, with cedar, charcoal, violet, raspberry leaf and slate. Fine tannins hold it all in place, you could give this a long carafe to drink now, but the real magic needs another decade or so. Charles Chevallier technical director, and this was the last year with Emile Peynaud as consultant, before Jacques Boissenot took over in 2006. A pair of scales was chosen to decorate the bottle neck to reflect the balance of the vintage”. 98 points Jane Anson -

Chateau Lafite Rothschild Premier Cru Classe, Pauillac 2000 150cl
Château Lafite Rothschild 2000 has immense power and longevity, with some critics putting the end of its window in the late 2070's. It is very rare in magnum format and ages beautifully.
"The nose... is fresh, bright, and dense. With aromas of violets, minerals, spices, cool stones, mint, dark fruits, and plum skins, this is beautiful… This is a wine for the next generation… truly a wine that makes you contemplate life. This is not about power, there is really nothing like it… Do not even think about touching this for another ten years".

Chateau Margaux Premier Cru Classe, Margaux 1990 150cl
Margaux 1990 speaks for itself. Extremely rare in magnum format with three 100 point reviews from very well respected critics.
“It offers an extraordinary aromatic display of spring flowers,... camphor, sweet red and black fruits, a hint of liquorice…Round and generous … fresh with laser-like precision, this stunning wine is just beginning to reach its plateau of full maturity, where it should remain for another three decades. A sensational effort, it is one of the legendary wines made at Chateau Margaux”.

Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, June 2009
“The 1990 Château Margaux is really beginning to hit its stride at age 31, … Full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's seamless and complete, … This is an especially dramatic, fleshy rendition of Margaux, yet it remains impeccably balanced and has decades of longevity ahead of it”.

William Kelley, Wine Advocate, February 2022
The 1990 Chateau Margaux has turned into a sensational wine that eclipses both the 1988 and 1989...and then some… it is the kind of nose in which you just immerse yourself… The palate is soft and sensual with incredible depth… I feel that this 1990 Château Margaux is at its peak ... Magnificent”.

Chateau Rieussec Premier Cru Classe, Sauternes 2017
A blend of 83% Semillon and 17% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2017 Rieussec is pale to medium lemon-gold colored. To begin, the nose blows you away with intense lemon tart, lime cordial, mango and quince... notes followed by a second wave of floral, orange blossoms and honeysuckle scents, and then notes of crushed rocks, crème caramel and marzipan join the party. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is still very tightly wound with concentrated sweetness and a racy backbone to match, delivering layer upon layer of citrus and savory flavors, finishing on a persistent mineral note.
2023 - 2057 97 points Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate
Inspirational depth with botrytis spice, toffee, dried-apricot and sponge-cake character. Full-bodied, very sweet and lively with a long, endless finish. Lively acidity balances the wine. Tight and linear. Compact column of fruit and botrytis. Give it age. Better after 2026. 98 Points James Suckling
Incredibly stylish, full-bodied and loaded with burnt orange notes, this is an amazingly detailed wine and one of the finest vintages of Rieussec in recent years. 19+ points Mathew Jukes
