Rufina wines often have more elegance and aging potential and is historically considered one of the most significant in Tuscany.
This has been aged in French oak for 24 months and 18 months in bottle and is also therefore considered a Riserva. This Toscana Rosso blend of Sangiovese (80%) and Merlot (20%) giving the blend gorgeous rich and dark fruit with that merlot soft velvety texture. I have ordered myself in large quantities - it has power, spice, freshness and bags of fruit and is wonderfully harmonious after time spent in oak and bottle, the 2022 is perfect to enjoy now. It doesn't get better in terms of value for money.

Chianti Rufina comes from cooler hillside vineyards northeast of Florence at the foot of the Apennines, which gives the wine incredible freshness and structure. Made mostly from Sangiovese, it has beautiful cherry, violet, and spice notes with vibrant acidity and the merlot gives it a richness and velvety texture. This is classic refined and elegant Tuscany with body and spice, the 2022 is perfect now and an exceptional food wine. 13.5%

La Palerna, Rosso Valdimonte 2018

Wines like this are what working in the wine trade is all about - a small volume of exceptional, mature red wine parcel from an artisanal... producer at an incredible price tag.
A blend of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Noir offers a deep ruby colour, with aromas of ripe red berries, wild herbs, violets, and subtle spice. On the palate, it’s fresh and medium-bodied, with soft tannins and a clean, gently savoury finish.
La Palerna sits high at 550-600m right on the Tuscan/Umbrian border. Thankfully for all of us, they are on the Umbrian side of the border and the price reflects this. At this altitude, the wines have a wonderful freshness and elegance. Yields are low, grapes are hand harvested and sorted, and such care and precision are taken in the winemaking which is evident in the quality of the wine. We have visited Bordeaux classified growths and Grand Cru Burgundies who take the same level of care in production. The overriding reason for all of this is perhaps down to winemaker extraordinaire, Mauro Monicchi who has worked across Bordeaux and the South of France, he now oversees winemaking for first class estates across Tuscany, namely Montalcino and Montepulciano. The quality of wines can also be put down to owner Luigi Merendelli’s philosophy to produce “only great wines”. I can confirm they do just that across the board, but this red is a home run at this price. The wonderful thing about central Italian reds are they are incredibly versatile when pairing with food and can be drunk all year around, indeed these are the wines to open at dinner parties or have at weddings.

One of the great Italian bargains; Produttori de Barbasesco owns some of the best vineyards in this famous Northern Italian appellation and has the deserved reputation of being one of the fineset... Co-operatives in the world. Its wines are consistently high quality and very reasonably priced.
Their Barbaresco 2022 is from an excellent vintage - the wine is surprisingly soft and juicy, with beautifully scented fruit and elegant structure without the dominant tannins normally associated with Nebbiolo - they are closer to those found in top Pinot Noirs The perfume is enchanting, which continues through to its long finish.
It is irresistible to drink straight away or happily sit in your cellar for another 5-7 years.
