Chateau Beychevelle 4eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2023 6x75cl
Chateau Beychevelle 2023 has been released at £718 per case (12x75cl). making it the cheapest Beychevelle on the market and a marvellous investment grade wine with the last 5 vintages showing an... average 15% increase in value – see the graph below. It is a classic example of the benefits of buying wine ‘en primeur’ and a must buy for us all who can get some.
When we tasted Beychevelle in Bordeaux last month, we were all in awe as to what a gorgeous wine it was already – all the critics agree. It is without question, one of the stars of the vintage
"The 2023 Beychevelle is fabulous. As always, Beychevelle includes quite a bit more Merlot than most wines in the appellation, but the Cabernet is especially high here. Inky dark fruit, crème de cassis, mocha, licorice and lavender build in the glass. This juicy, extroverted Saint-Julien has a ton to offer. The combination of fruit intensity, acid and supporting structure is superb. The 2023 is showy, but not at all overdone. Beychevelle remains one of the most distinctive wines in all of Bordeaux. It is especially classy in this edition. Tasted two times. 2033-2063" 94-96 points, Antonio Galloni
"Pure fruit to this, with blueberries, hazelnuts, walnut and blackcurrants. Just like eating grapes at this stage. It has a full body, juicy tannins and a savory finish. Remains vivid and energetic." 94-95 points, James Suckling
"From a château that seems to have hit another gear over the past five to seven years, the 2023 Château Beychevelle is based on 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot, pulled from 60% of the total production, and will see 18 months in 70% new French oak. Its deep purple hue is followed by a deep, rich, medium to full-bodied Saint-Julien loaded with ripe red and blue fruits, leafy herbs, truffle, iron, and spring flowers. It's medium to full-bodied, has a remarkable sense of freshness and purity, velvety tannins, and outstanding length. The 2023 hit 13.3% alcohol with a rock-solid pH of 3.67." 93-96 points, Jeb Dunnuck
“The 2023 Beychevelle has turned out especially well this year, exhibiting a more integrated, seductive style than recent vintages that were constructed in a punchier, more extracted register. Offering up aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notions of pen ink, violets and pencil shavings, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and fleshy, with a deep core of fruit and a classy, suave profile that foregrounds the estate's prime vineyard holdings on the plateau around Ducru-Beaucaillou. It's a blend of 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot that represents 50% of the estate's production.” 93-94 points, William Kelley
"The 2023 Beychevelle was picked from September 13 through October 6 over 17 days of harvest, partly because of the size of the crop and not having to rush. It has the highest proportion of Merlot under winemaker Philippe Blanc (35%), and it matured in 70% new oak. This has a notably floral and tightly-knit bouquet, leaning a little more toward blue fruit than other Saint-Julien wines tasted from barrel. The oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with strict tannins that impart a sense of linearity. Very saline, this is a saliva-inducing Beychevelle, lightly spiced with a structured, almost Pauillac-like finish. Excellent." 92-94 points, Neal Martin

Chateau Canon Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023 6x75cl
Château Canon 2023 is one of ‘the great Canon vintages ‘ with two potential 100-point scores and universal praise from the critics and at 25% less than last year, it is a compelling buy and very... reasonably priced. The demand for Canon is now enormous and our allocation relatively modest.
The Canon story is now part of St Emillion legend since it was bought by Chanel 12 years ago. They invested heavily in the vineyard and appointed the hugely talented Nicholas Audebert as their winemaker – he was recognised within a few years as Bordeaux’ no 1 winemaker as Canon established itself as one of the top St Émilions whose reputation grows with every vintage. This is a wine we should all be following.
"This is so elegant and sophisticated already, with a really electric presence and length that goes on and on. It's medium- to full-bodied with an intensity of tannins. It remains weightless and energetic. The pH is 3.41, making this a vivid and lively wine. Currant, orange and stone. Sea salt, too. The limestone soils created a unique wine here in 2023. A blend of 71% merlot and 29% cabernet franc." 99-100 points, James Suckling
"A blend of 71% Merlot and 29% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Canon has a pH of 3.42 and it will age in barriques for 16-18 months, of which 50% are new. It is deep garnet-purple in color and sails out of the glass with bold notions of juicy blueberries, fresh plums, and Bing cherries, giving way to hints of black pepper, fragrant soil, and violets. The medium to full-bodied palate shimmers with energetic black and blue fruits, framed by super-satiny tannins and compelling tension, finishing long and fragrant. Absolutely ethereal!" 98-100
points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW
"Wafting from the glass with aromas of mulberries and raspberries mingled with spices, rose petals, licorice and violets, the 2023 Canon is another brilliant wine from a property whose excellence can almost be taken for granted. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it's seamless and concentrated, its vibrant core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins and girdled by lively acids, concluding with a long, mineral finish." 96-98 points, William Kelley
"Finesse and saline limestone character on full display, spiced plum, textural as ever, with finely boned architecture, in the line of great Canon vintages, with density to the black fruits and the mouthwateringly precise tannic grip and oyster shell salinity. 50% new oak for ageing, harvest September 6 through to October 4 (with Merlot going right through until the end, unlike many places, here they really waited). 45hl/ha yield, in organic conversion. Tasted twice." 96 points, Jane Anson
"The 2023 Canon was picked from around 6 September to 6 October at 45hL/ha and matured in 50% new oak. It has a perfumed bouquet with pure black cherries and touches of cassis and violet. The oak is beautifully integrated. Perhaps if I have to quibble, it is not quite as complex as the very best recent vintages, but that's a high bar nowadays. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black cherry fruit laced with iodine, and veins of blue fruit. There is a sorbet-like freshness embroidered throughout this Canon, and it delivers a lovely cracked black pepper note on the finish. Excellent. Again." 94-96 points, Neal Martin
"A wine of classicism and reserve, the 2023 Canon is less overtly expressive than most recent vintages, keeping much of its personality in reserve. Nevertheless, I watched it grow considerably over the two weeks I spent in Bordeaux. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, mint and spice are some of the many notes that open in the glass. It is a wine that marries generous fruit with classical rigor. I won't be surprised if it shows even better with time. Tasted four times. 2033-2063" 94-96 points, Antonio Galloni
The 2023 is 71% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Franc from a healthy yield of 45 hl/ha. Elevage is in 50% new oak, 50% second fill from 5 coopers (Sylvain, Taransaud, Quintesance, Demptos and St Martin) and also in 3 large foudres. This is regarded by the team here as a more approachable version of the excellent 2016 produced here.

Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan 2023 6x75cl
Château Carmes Haut Brion 2023 has been released and is ‘a fantastic wine’. The Château is tiny with under 8 hectares of vines and over the last 5+ years has become the new Bordeaux superstar... with everyone fighting for allocations and the wine selling out immediately.
This was a Château we had to visit in April - we were all enthralled by how good the wine was with whole bunch pressed grapes and 50% Cabernet Franc in the blend – it is a wine you cannot find fault with - perfection. It is also great value at 31% less than last year. If you could only buy one this year this would probably be it - read the critics reviews!. It is also a top investment grade wine on which we all make money if we are lucky enough to be offered an allocation.
"This is a fantastic wine and very, very exciting, with purity and brightness to the floral, spicy and blackberry notes. It’s full and deep with agility and weightless. You feel the greatness in this. The winemaker says this is more concentrated and structured than the 2022. Lightly salty. 60% whole-berry fermentation. 50% cabernet franc, 30% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. From organically grown grapes." 98-99 points, James Suckling
"Guillaume Pouthier and his team have once again crafted one of Bordeaux's most unique and characterful wines. Revealing aromas of mulberries and raspberries mingled with notions of vine smoke, orange zest, rose petals and spices, the 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, with a powerful, vibrant and complete mid-palate, concluding with a long, ethereal and mouthwateringly saline finish. Sensual, suave and seamless, its beautifully refined tannins are, analytically, more abundant than even those of the 2022 vintage, yet they are so brilliantly integrated as to be near-imperceptible. This blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot is crafted for longevity, though its refined structure will make it surprisingly approachable at an early age. It's maturing 70% in new oak barrels, 20% in 18-hectoliter foudres and 10% in amphorae. A creditable yield of 50 hectoliters per hectare represents a decided agronomic success in what was a challenging growing season." 97-99 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate
"A blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Merlot, Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2023 has a pH of 3.62. It was fermented with 60% whole bunches and it is aging in 70% new oak barrels, 20% new oak vats of 18 hl, and 10% amphorae. It has an opaque purple-black color and needs a little swirling and coaxing to bring out fabulously pure, well-defined notes of juicy black cherries, blackcurrant pastilles, ripe juicy blackberries, and licorice, leading to hints of tar, peonies, wet slate, and black olives, with a touch of Sichuan pepper. The light to medium-bodied palate is airy and refreshing, with a solid backbone of very fine-grained, prancing tannins and bold freshness supporting the pristine black fruit flavors, finishing long and minerally. I had to spend a good 15 minutes with this wine to allow it to grow: it is incredibly tight to begin but expands to become something powerful. A beguiling 2023 with fully ripe black fruit characters and a paradoxical airiness, it really makes your head spin in the best possible way!" 96-98 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW
"Always a unique take on the vintage, the Carmes at this stage still shows the personality of wholebunch but it is very well integrated this year. Deep ruby in colour with blueberry, blackberry and a hint of white pepper on the nose, there is a delicate hint of szechuan spice and wood smoke. The palate is chalky, with a lick of that same sweet exotic spice set against deeply mineral fruit. Layers of blueberry, dark cherry and blackcurrant interlock with the notes of rosemary, graphite and peppercorns that define this wine. Another stellar effort, this is long, structured and yet always fleet-footed. Excellent." 95-98 points, Thomas Parker MW
"The 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion was picked September 11 to 25 with 60% whole bunch and more Cabernet Franc than usual. Aging was 70% in new barrels, 20% in 18-hectoliter foudres and 10% in amphorae. This offers plenty of dark berry fruit mixed with cedar and pinecones on the nose, very well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, and the acidity is very well-judged. Just a soupçon of white pepper appears toward the finish. This is a much more succinct Les Carmes than the 2022, but it’s extremely harmonious and characterful." 94-96 points, Neal Martin
"Elderflower and peony aromatics, stunning inky plum colour that is very much a signature of Carmes, where it looks so enticing and ripe visually, and then on the palate you feel this constrasting vibrant lift and drinkablity. Back to the signature squid ink flavour that is the key marker of ripe Cabernet in the vintage, and here the grippy slate texture slows everything slows, slowly humming through the palate. Has a sappy, drinkablity, with crushed rose petals and salted cracker salinity. 60% whole cluster, harvest September 11 to 25. 3.6ph. Distinctive, intense, one for Carmes lovers to celebrate." 96 points, Jane Anson
"The 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is increasingly a wine of seamlessness. Whereas the various components were once easily discernible, today Carmes is most often a wine of total beauty. The 2023 is a bit shy, especially in its aromatics. In other words, a pretty big departure from so many other recent vintages that have been far showier at this stage. Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier explains that he plans to give the 2023 longer aging, around 24-26 months, so he approached vinification and the early part of aging in a more reductive style than in the past. As always, Les Carmes is marked by its strong presence of Cabernet Franc and use of whole clusters, but as mentioned above, those signatures are less immediately evident than they once were. Les Carmes has been one of Bordeaux's stars over the last few years. I can't wait to see how the 2023 turns out. 2035-2073" 94-96 points, Antonio Galloni

Chateau Lynch Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2023 6x75cl
Château Lynch Bages has made a crackingly good, highly rated 2023 down in price by 34% from last year making it the lowest priced Lynch on the market. When we all tasted it in Bordeaux at the end of... last month we were very impressed with its elegance, vibrancy and intense rich berry fruit flavours – this will be a great Lynch Bages if you are able to get some - Liv-ex again says ‘if you are lucky enough to get an allocation’…
Lynch Bages has been under the stewardship of the legendary Jean-Michel Cazes who sadly died last summer, with him at the helm the Estate has become one of the leading wines of Pauillac with a global following. A tribute to a great man.
"Blackberry, black cherry, crushed stone and graphite. Lead pencil, too. It’s full-bodied with juicy, chewy tannins. Vertical and layered with lovely length. Quite plush. Chewy tannins at the end. Cabernet sauvignon driven. Showing excellent potential." 97-98 points, James Suckling
"A Lynch Bages that speaks more to the property's style than it does the vintage, this is a deep, shiny purple in the glass and has a powerful, black-fruit laden nose. Hints of nutmeg and liquorice come through, but the purity of cassis here is very impressive. Broad-shouldered on the palate, this is a dense, chewy vin de garde that will need at least a decade in bottle before approaching. Powerful, ripe yet never overblown, this is the essence of Pauillac, vertical, spicy and impressive. A wine with a real sense of place, this is a brilliant example of this château's unique style. Superb." 96-98 points, Thomas Parker MW
"Concentrated, intense and muscular, not a word that I have used very often in 2023 Bordeaux. You get a deeply-rooted tannic grip, with soot, squid ink, cassis, blackberry, bilberry, liqourice root, slate scrap, pummice stone and mint. Lynch Bages seems to be wrought from a different place than it was a decade ago, impressive, powerful Pauillac, with an eye on long ageing. 75% new oak, Jean-Charles Cazes owner, Nicolas Labenne technical director." 96 points, Jane Anson
"The 2023 Lynch-Bages is a dark, brooding wine. In so many vintages, Lynch-Bages is a wine of sensuality, but in 2023, it is quite the powerhouse. Formidable tannins wrap around a core of black fruit, spice, menthol, licorice and gravel. This is a somber, introspective Lynch-Bages with a ton of Cabernet Sauvignon character. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. 2033-2073" 94-97 points, Antonio Galloni
"The 2023 Lynch-Bages takes some time to really settle, so I gave it 5-10 minutes in the glass. On the nose, glossy black fruit mixes with touches of cassis, graphite, violets and blood orange, perhaps demonstrating more horsepower than I anticipated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, saturated tannins. There is a lovely symmetry to this Pauillac (not unlike Latour), armed with a cashmere texture and plenty of backbone on the finish, even though I would not describe it as a "grippy" Lynch-Bages. There’s plenty of graphite character on the aftertaste. Excellent." 93-95 points, Neal Martin
"As usual one of the chunkier, broader-shouldered wines of the Médoc, the 2023 Lynch-Bages exhibits aromas of dark berries and cassis mingled with pencil shavings, licorice and pipe tobacco, framed by creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's deep, concentrated and generously extracted, with plenty of youthfully chewy tannin to carry it along in the cellar. The 2023 is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot." 93-95 points, William Kelley

Chateau Poujeaux, Moulis en Medoc 2016 3x150cl
From a brilliant claret vintage, Château Poujeaux 2016 unfolds a complex and expressive bouquet. Ripe black fruits such as cherries, blueberries, and blackcurrants take center stage, interwoven with... enticing hints of jamminess. As the wine breathes, a captivating floral dimension emerges, revealing delicate notes of lily and violet.
The palate is greeted by a full-bodied and beautifully balanced expression. The initial burst of black fruit flavors intensifies, complemented by a touch of Morello cherry. Hints of earth and spice add further complexity, while the smooth, silky tannins provide a delightful textural element. The finish is long and lingering, leaving a lasting impression.

Grand Pontet... brings limestone-dominated soil, enhancing the quality of this investment-grade wine. This top-range Saint-Émilion wine comes from land that borders the likes of Ausone. Audrey Bernard, who brings her expertise from Opus One, along with new director Mariette Veyssiere, has produced a great wine here.
The 2023 Quintus is a rich, racy Grand Vin. Ample and resonant, the 2023 offers up copious dark-toned fruit, cedar, mint, tobacco, incense and French oak. There's tons of power and breadth but also more freshness than the early vintages, even if the oak is a touch present today. 2028 – 2048 94/96 Points Antonio Galloni
This year, the 2023 Quintus is a well-performing wine, possessing a dense, complex bouquet of smoke, dark wild berries and licorice intertwined with a delicate, oaky frame. Fleshy and ample, medium to full-bodied, it’s perfectly balanced with a delicate, lively core of fruit and a long, ethereal and chalky finish. The influence of the Grand Pontet limestone plateau lends additional straightness and precision to this wine, a blend of 78.3% Merlot and 21.7% Cabernet Franc. 93/95 Points Yohan Castaing
The purity of the fruit here is so impressive, with raspberry, lead pencil, cedar and sandalwood. Medium to full body with very fine and intense tannins that run the length of the wine. Mineral. Tensioned. Beautifully integrated and sophisticated at the end. Lightly salty. 78.3% merlot and 21.7% cabernet franc. 95/96 Points James Suckling
Brambled fruit, richly textured, with juice that runs through the palate bringing you into the heart of St Emilion. Push and pull in texture between grilled smoky oak and slate-scraping pumice stone tannins, this takes its time to open, well judged and skilfully constructed. 43hl/h yield, 42ha in production since addition of Grand Pontet in 2021. Audrey Bernard joined the technical team in March 2021 direct from Opus One, plus new director Mariette Veyssiere. 94 Points Jane Anson

Chateau Siran, Margaux 2020 6x150cl
Chateau Siran 2020 from Margaux is a confidently made wine that has drawn strong praise from several leading critics. The blend follows a classic Left Bank shape with Merlot supported by Cabernet... Sauvignon and Petit Verdot, and the wine shows the estate in fine form.
"This is seriously structured with blackcurrants, blueberries and iodine. It’s full yet so tight and focused with serious austerity and focus. Very classy and polished with precision. A terrific Siran. Try after 2026.” 95 Points, James Suckling
“The 2020 Siran sees the reintroduction of the art series label. It offers black cherries and wild strawberry scents, cedar and pencil lead. Light marine scents emerge with time. The palate is medium-bodied with a powdery texture, very nicely balanced, hints of white pepper and tobacco towards the classically-lined finish. Superb, even if tasting them alongside, I find a soupçon more complexity in the 2019 Siran.” 92 Points, Neal Martin,
“This is powerful and juicy with well balanced, opulent berry fruits - easy to fall in love with. This really is one of the few that has tannins that feel well caressed by the fruits, and the slightly higher than average alcohols gives a flattering feel through the mid palate. Nice job from winemaker Marjolaine Defrance and owner Edouard Miahle (who is now president of AOC Margaux, having succeeded Gonzague Lurton). Tasted twice. 1% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 35% new oak. Hubert de Boüard consultant oenologist. Harvest September 11 to October 3.” 93 Points, Jane Anson

Domaine Lecheneaut, Morey-Saint-Denis, Clos des Ormes 2022 6x75cl
Mid cherry. A step up. Rich, sweet, concentrated red- and black-berry fruit on the nose; rounded and fuller expanse of flavour on the palate but remaining well defined and balanced. (MH) 17 points... Jancis Robinson
Some of ‘Clos des Ormes’ is classified as 1er Cru, Lecheneaut plot extends just outside the 1er Cru appellation and so this splendid wine has to be sold at merely village level. Fresh, elegant, vividly fruity wine with depth and class. Brilliant value.

Le C des Carmes Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan 2022 3x150cl
Le C des Carmes Haut Brion 2022 is the second wine of Château Les Carmes Haut Brion, one of the most distinctive and sought after estates in Bordeaux. Produced in very limited quantities,... allocations of both Le C and the grand vin are consistently tight, reflecting the estate’s growing reputation and meticulous vineyard selection.
Unlike many second wines in Bordeaux, Le C des Carmes Haut Brion has its own identity rather than simply being a lighter version of the grand vin. The blend is led by a high proportion of Cabernet Franc, which brings freshness, perfume and precision to the wine. The grand vin itself also contains an unusually large amount of Cabernet Franc by Left Bank standards, but with greater depth, structure and ageing potential due to stricter parcel selection and élevage.
Production remains small by Bordeaux standards, with the grand vin typically around 40,000 bottles annually and Le C produced in similarly limited quantities depending on the vintage and selection.
The 2022 vintage is an exceptional year in Bordeaux, producing wines with both concentration and freshness. At Les Carmes Haut Brion this results in a wine that combines ripe fruit with energy and refinement, showing far more character and complexity than many second wines.
Tasting notes
Le C des Carmes Haut Brion 2022 shows aromas of black cherry, cassis and plum, with notes of violet, graphite and subtle spice.
On the palate the wine is polished and expressive, with fresh dark fruit supported by fine grained tannins and lively acidity. The Cabernet Franc brings floral lift and freshness, leading to a refined and persistent finish with impressive precision.

Samuel Billaud, Chablis Premier Cru, Mont de Milieu 2022 6x75cl
The 2022 vintage of Samuel Billaud's 1er Cru Mont de Milieu Chablis is distinguished by its high quality and refinement. From Billaud's vinard this showcases a remarkable balance of crisp acidity and... a rich texture with flavors of apple and stone fruit. It also features pronounced salinity in the finish, which is a hallmark of Chablis. The wine was matured 80% in tank and 20% in barrels for a year, before being blended and aged for an additional year in the tank. This process contributed to the wine's complexity and elegance, with a denser hue and lovely texture.

Samuel Billaud, Chablis Premier Cru, Sechet Vieilles Vignes 2022
“A special bottling from vines more than 90 years old: a vineyard marked by a high proportion of stones and old rootstock…it's really very classy and long. A great combination of pear fruit,... touch of sunny peach on the palate with abundant minerality to finish. Drink 2025-22031 95 points Decanter
“…this could be from nowhere else but Chablis, particularly with the prominent quinine influence that carries over to the dense, palate soaking and powerful yet refined flavors that deliver stunningly good length. This is terrific ... In sum, if you can find it, buy it.”
