Clos de Nouys, Vouvray, Sec 2024

Clos de Nouys is the essence of dry Vouvray and this 25 acre estate is found just outside the eponymous sleepy village, where they are the masters of Chenin Blanc. This is as good and affordable as... Chenin Blanc gets. On the palate this is dry, full bodied and with a hint of flinty minerality and fantastic acidity for a clean finish that suits seafood perfectly.

CVNE Contino Reserva Rioja 2020

The Contino Reserva 2020 from CVNE is a proper Rioja — full of character, beautifully made, and seriously good value for money. Made from 85% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, and the rest a mix of... Garnacha and Mazuelo, it’s aged for two years in oak barrels (20% American, 80% French) and then further in bottle before release. The oak adds warmth and spice, but it’s all really well balanced. It opens with bright red fruit – strawberry, raspberry, a touch of blueberry – with hints of vanilla, liquorice, and a subtle balsamic edge. On the palate it’s fresh, smooth, and elegant, with enough grip to stand up to food but soft enough to enjoy on its own. The finish is long and refined. It’s incredibly versatile with food – great with roast lamb or grilled meats, rich pasta or pizza dishes, casseroles, stews, and mature cheeses. We’ve had to edge the price up slightly to £21.75, but for a Reserva of this quality, it still punches well above its weight. It’s a wine I’ll be making room for in the cellar.

Le Dome, Saint-Emilion 2020

A true cult wine of Saint-Émilion, Le Dôme 2020 is the flagship of Jonathan Maltus’s portfolio, showcasing the purity and power of Cabernet Franc at its finest. Produced in tiny quantities from a... single vineyard on the slopes of the plateau, it captures both elegance and intensity in equal measure. "This iconic wine comes from a single vineyard on the slopes of the Saint-Emilion plateau. Mainly Cabernet Franc, the wine is beautifully perfumed with structure and tannins in harmony alongside black fruits. Still young, the wine is sure to age. Drink from 2026." 98 Points Wine Enthusiast "The 2020 Le Dome is a blend of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot with an alcohol of 13.9% and a pH of 3.69. The Merlot was harvested on September 29th, with the Cabernet Franc on October 8th and 9th. It is being aged in 80% new French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes storming out of the glass with thunderous scents of stewed plums, blueberry preserves and chocolate-covered cherries, followed by impactful, fragrant notions of rose oil, ground cloves, eucalyptus and pencil shavings. The palate is jaw-droppingly elegant, considering the power of the nose, featuring elegantly crafted black and red fruit layers with very ripe, finely grained tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Le Dome is from the JCP Maltus portfolio of skillfully crafted Saint-Émilion wines. Neil White is the head winemaker and Thomas Duclos is a consultant here." 97-99 Points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate
