Description

Château Canon 2023 is one of ‘the great Canon vintages ‘ with two potential 100-point scores and universal praise from the critics and at 25% less than last year, it is a compelling buy and very reasonably priced. The demand for Canon is now enormous and our allocation relatively modest.

The Canon story is now part of St Emillion legend since it was bought by Chanel 12 years ago. They invested heavily in the vineyard and appointed the hugely talented Nicholas Audebert as their winemaker – he was recognised within a few years as Bordeaux’ no 1 winemaker as Canon established itself as one of the top St Émilions whose reputation grows with every vintage. This is a wine we should all be following.

“This is so elegant and sophisticated already, with a really electric presence and length that goes on and on. It’s medium- to full-bodied with an intensity of tannins. It remains weightless and energetic. The pH is 3.41, making this a vivid and lively wine. Currant, orange and stone. Sea salt, too. The limestone soils created a unique wine here in 2023. A blend of 71% merlot and 29% cabernet franc.” 99-100 points, James Suckling

“A blend of 71% Merlot and 29% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Canon has a pH of 3.42 and it will age in barriques for 16-18 months, of which 50% are new. It is deep garnet-purple in color and sails out of the glass with bold notions of juicy blueberries, fresh plums, and Bing cherries, giving way to hints of black pepper, fragrant soil, and violets. The medium to full-bodied palate shimmers with energetic black and blue fruits, framed by super-satiny tannins and compelling tension, finishing long and fragrant. Absolutely ethereal!” 98-100
points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW

“Wafting from the glass with aromas of mulberries and raspberries mingled with spices, rose petals, licorice and violets, the 2023 Canon is another brilliant wine from a property whose excellence can almost be taken for granted. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, it’s seamless and concentrated, its vibrant core of fruit framed by sweet, powdery tannins and girdled by lively acids, concluding with a long, mineral finish.” 96-98 points, William Kelley

“Finesse and saline limestone character on full display, spiced plum, textural as ever, with finely boned architecture, in the line of great Canon vintages, with density to the black fruits and the mouthwateringly precise tannic grip and oyster shell salinity. 50% new oak for ageing, harvest September 6 through to October 4 (with Merlot going right through until the end, unlike many places, here they really waited). 45hl/ha yield, in organic conversion. Tasted twice.” 96 points, Jane Anson

“The 2023 Canon was picked from around 6 September to 6 October at 45hL/ha and matured in 50% new oak. It has a perfumed bouquet with pure black cherries and touches of cassis and violet. The oak is beautifully integrated. Perhaps if I have to quibble, it is not quite as complex as the very best recent vintages, but that’s a high bar nowadays. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black cherry fruit laced with iodine, and veins of blue fruit. There is a sorbet-like freshness embroidered throughout this Canon, and it delivers a lovely cracked black pepper note on the finish. Excellent. Again.” 94-96 points, Neal Martin

“A wine of classicism and reserve, the 2023 Canon is less overtly expressive than most recent vintages, keeping much of its personality in reserve. Nevertheless, I watched it grow considerably over the two weeks I spent in Bordeaux. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, mint and spice are some of the many notes that open in the glass. It is a wine that marries generous fruit with classical rigor. I won’t be surprised if it shows even better with time. Tasted four times. 2033-2063” 94-96 points, Antonio Galloni

The 2023 is 71% Merlot, 29% Cabernet Franc from a healthy yield of 45 hl/ha. Elevage is in 50% new oak, 50% second fill from 5 coopers (Sylvain, Taransaud, Quintesance, Demptos and St Martin) and also in 3 large foudres. This is regarded by the team here as a more approachable version of the excellent 2016 produced here.

Chateau Canon Premier Grand Cru Classe B, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2021 300cl

Château Canon is one of the leading estates of Saint Emilion, located on the limestone plateau above the village and classified as a Premier Grand Cru Classé B. Owned by Chanel, the estate has seen... significant investment in recent years, producing wines of increasing precision and consistency. The vineyard is planted predominantly with Merlot supported by Cabernet Franc, grown on limestone and clay soils that bring both freshness and structure. The 2021 vintage is a more classical year, favouring balance and elegance over power, and at Canon this has resulted in a wine that shows purity and refinement. Tasting notes Château Canon 2021 shows aromas of red cherry, plum and blackberry, layered with notes of violet, spice and a touch of graphite. On the palate the wine is refined and well structured, with fresh fruit supported by fine tannins and lively acidity. The finish is long and precise, highlighting the elegance and balance of the vintage. Large format In 300cl, the wine will develop more slowly, allowing the structure and aromatics to integrate gradually while preserving freshness over time. Drinking window 2028 to 2045 A classical and elegant Saint Emilion from one of the appellation’s leading estates, with both immediate appeal and long term ageing potential.

Chateau Cissac, Haut-Medoc 2023 3x150cl

Chateau Cissac 2023 is an beautifully made Cru Bourgeoise claret with commendable reviews from the critics and released at only £8.00 per bottle in bond. With a large and loyal following in the UK... it is a wine we should all be buying this year – it is one of the bargains of the vintage ‘good aromatic length, very appealing finish, a very elegant and classic Cissac style’ Markus Del Monego MW ‘A good vintage at this estate’ Jane Anson Intense purple colour with violet hue. Very elegant and expressive nose, very pure fruit, blackcurrants and blackberries, hints of raspberries in the background and discreet toasting. A whiff of vanilla and discreet floral hints in the background. On the palate well-structured with balanced tannins, good aromatic length, very appealing finish, a very elegant and classic Cissac style, however interpreted in a contemporary way. 92 Points Markus Del Monego MW A good vintage at this estate, with vibrant red cherry and damson fruit, a good dollop of black pepper spice and fresh floral aromatics. It's a little austere but it's juicy and has sinewy tannins that suggest ageing ability. A success, with personality and a pretty feel. Owner Marie Vialard. 91 Points Jane Anson With vines near the Gironde Estuary far north in the Médoc, a textbook example of success from cooler Left Bank terroir in this vintage, with bright and brambly cassis and plum, delivered in a straightforward fashion. I like the mid-palate concentration and depth, although the finish is marked by somewhat strict tannins. In this case, barrel ageing in 25% new oak should smoothe such edges. 91 Points Decanter

Chateau Lynch Bages 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2023 6x75cl

Château Lynch Bages has made a crackingly good, highly rated 2023 down in price by 34% from last year making it the lowest priced Lynch on the market. When we all tasted it in Bordeaux at the end of... last month we were very impressed with its elegance, vibrancy and intense rich berry fruit flavours – this will be a great Lynch Bages if you are able to get some - Liv-ex again says ‘if you are lucky enough to get an allocation’… Lynch Bages has been under the stewardship of the legendary Jean-Michel Cazes who sadly died last summer, with him at the helm the Estate has become one of the leading wines of Pauillac with a global following. A tribute to a great man. "Blackberry, black cherry, crushed stone and graphite. Lead pencil, too. It’s full-bodied with juicy, chewy tannins. Vertical and layered with lovely length. Quite plush. Chewy tannins at the end. Cabernet sauvignon driven. Showing excellent potential." 97-98 points, James Suckling "A Lynch Bages that speaks more to the property's style than it does the vintage, this is a deep, shiny purple in the glass and has a powerful, black-fruit laden nose. Hints of nutmeg and liquorice come through, but the purity of cassis here is very impressive. Broad-shouldered on the palate, this is a dense, chewy vin de garde that will need at least a decade in bottle before approaching. Powerful, ripe yet never overblown, this is the essence of Pauillac, vertical, spicy and impressive. A wine with a real sense of place, this is a brilliant example of this château's unique style. Superb." 96-98 points, Thomas Parker MW "Concentrated, intense and muscular, not a word that I have used very often in 2023 Bordeaux. You get a deeply-rooted tannic grip, with soot, squid ink, cassis, blackberry, bilberry, liqourice root, slate scrap, pummice stone and mint. Lynch Bages seems to be wrought from a different place than it was a decade ago, impressive, powerful Pauillac, with an eye on long ageing. 75% new oak, Jean-Charles Cazes owner, Nicolas Labenne technical director." 96 points, Jane Anson "The 2023 Lynch-Bages is a dark, brooding wine. In so many vintages, Lynch-Bages is a wine of sensuality, but in 2023, it is quite the powerhouse. Formidable tannins wrap around a core of black fruit, spice, menthol, licorice and gravel. This is a somber, introspective Lynch-Bages with a ton of Cabernet Sauvignon character. I can't wait to taste this from bottle. 2033-2073" 94-97 points, Antonio Galloni "The 2023 Lynch-Bages takes some time to really settle, so I gave it 5-10 minutes in the glass. On the nose, glossy black fruit mixes with touches of cassis, graphite, violets and blood orange, perhaps demonstrating more horsepower than I anticipated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, saturated tannins. There is a lovely symmetry to this Pauillac (not unlike Latour), armed with a cashmere texture and plenty of backbone on the finish, even though I would not describe it as a "grippy" Lynch-Bages. There’s plenty of graphite character on the aftertaste. Excellent." 93-95 points, Neal Martin "As usual one of the chunkier, broader-shouldered wines of the Médoc, the 2023 Lynch-Bages exhibits aromas of dark berries and cassis mingled with pencil shavings, licorice and pipe tobacco, framed by creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, rich and layered, it's deep, concentrated and generously extracted, with plenty of youthfully chewy tannin to carry it along in the cellar. The 2023 is a blend of 71% Cabernet Sauvignon, 24% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot." 93-95 points, William Kelley
