As always, however, our good vines, faithful and strong, adapted and overcame these difficult moments. The summer temperatures remained reasonable, and ripening was slow, calm and very complete. The grapes remained small and concentrated. Small quantities, high degrees, a perfect state of health. The most demanding of winegrowers was content. A famously perfect year throughout the growing season. This was the star of the tasting for pure, inherent quality - a truly glorious wine that will presumably continue to impress those lucky enough to taste it for many decades to come. Very dark, shaded crimson. The most gorgeous panoply of aromas on the nose - not yet knit but just starting to integrate. Exceptionally promising. Absolutely marvellous wine that was extremely difficult to spit. Fresh but ripe with great life and energy. The density of fruit covered the considerable charge of tannin. Such verve! So healthy. Carruades de Lafite, Pauillac 2023 6x75cl

Carruades , one of the most sought-after wines every year has just been released. It is the second wine of Ch Lafite Rothschild, and has been released at £930.00 per 6x75cl, a price reduction of... 19% on the 2022 vintage. It is one of the best recent vintages of Carruades and at this price it will be one of the top performers among the 2023’s you buy. Simply put -it is investment Gold Dust, largely due to its particularly strong following in the Asian market. Carruades is in reality much more than you could ask of a second wine, with its own personality, yet made providing a glimpse of what makes Lafite the global success which it is. 2023 sees the inclusion of grapes from the ‘Caudeyrac’ plot, a prominent portion of the Lafite plateau, which has given Carruades a more Pauillac personality than ever before this year. "A savory and juicy Carruades with softness and notes of ripe berry, cedar and dried tobacco. Like Lafite from the 1980s but more precise. Round and pretty. It really grows on the finish with such sweetness of fruit and length. Pointed, fine tannins at the end. Very long. Château Lynch Bages has made a crackingly good, highly rated 2023 down in price by 34% from last year making it the lowest priced Lynch on the market. When we all tasted it in Bordeaux at the end of... last month we were very impressed with its elegance, vibrancy and intense rich berry fruit flavours – this will be a great Lynch Bages if you are able to get some - Liv-ex again says ‘if you are lucky enough to get an allocation’… Lynch Bages has been under the stewardship of the legendary Jean-Michel Cazes who sadly died last summer, with him at the helm the Estate has become one of the leading wines of Pauillac with a global following. A tribute to a great man. "Blackberry, black cherry, crushed stone and graphite. Lead pencil, too. It’s full-bodied with juicy, chewy tannins. Vertical and layered with lovely length. Quite plush. Chewy tannins at the end. Cabernet sauvignon driven. Showing excellent potential." 97-98 points, James Suckling "A Lynch Bages that speaks more to the property's style than it does the vintage, this is a deep, shiny purple in the glass and has a powerful, black-fruit laden nose. This is a somber, introspective Lynch-Bages with a ton of Cabernet Sauvignon character. On the nose, glossy black fruit mixes with touches of cassis, graphite, violets and blood orange, perhaps demonstrating more horsepower than I anticipated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, saturated tannins. There is a lovely symmetry to this Pauillac (not unlike Latour), armed with a cashmere texture and plenty of backbone on the finish, even though I would not describe it as a "grippy" Lynch-Bages. There’s plenty of graphite character on the aftertaste.
