Description

Langoa Barton has made an exceptional 2022 with scores from the critics as high as 96-97. We were all captivated by it when we tasted it in Bordeaux at the end of March; it is a brilliant Langoa Barton.

“the brilliant 2022 Langoa Barton… it should match or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages, and it is sure to be one of the more intelligent purchases of the en primeur campaign.” William Kelley Wine Advocate

Château Langoa-Barton, (like its sister estate, Léoville Barton) is one of the few chateaux, out of all the 1855 Classified Growths, that is still in the hands of the same family that was the owner at the time of the 1855 classification. The estate today is run by Lillian Barton after her father, Anthony Barton, one of the Bordeaux legends sadly passed away last year.

The style of Château Langoa Barton is quite different than that of Château Léoville Barton. Though both are vinified and matured in exactly the same way, a large part of that of course has to do with their vineyards and their location – the vines for Langoa Barton are due south of Leoville Barton and face the River Gironde, with north by north-west exposure. The Château Langoa-Barton blend is dominated by hand-harvested Cabernet Sauvignon, but it sees a higher proportion of Merlot than Léoville-Barton and a touch of Cabernet Franc. The gravel-rich soils and cooling waters of the Gironde contribute to its silky, elegant appeal and ability to age gracefully.
A fantastic wine from an excellent vintage – a beautifully balanced classic claret displaying typical St Julien restraint and elegance and in our opinion, one of the best value Cru Classé estates… “The 2022 Langoa Barton is vibrant and focused, as the best wines are in this vintage…There’s a purity to the 2022 that is impossible to miss.” “Langoa could turn out to be one of the Sleepers of 2022” Antonio Galloni

Chateau Langoa Barton 3eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2021 3x300cl

Château Langoa Barton is one of the historic estates of Saint Julien and was classified as a Third Growth in the 1855 Bordeaux Classification. The château has remained in the Barton family since... the early nineteenth century and is known for producing classic Médoc wines that combine structure, balance and long ageing potential. The vineyard sits on gravel soils typical of Saint Julien, ideally suited to Cabernet Sauvignon. Plantings are led by Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Merlot and Cabernet Franc, producing wines that show both depth and the refined character associated with the appellation. The 2021 vintage in Bordeaux required careful vineyard work and precise selection. At Langoa Barton the result is a wine that shows purity of fruit and classic structure, reflecting the consistency of the estate in a more challenging year. Château Langoa Barton 2021 tasting notes Château Langoa Barton 2021 shows aromas of cassis, red plum and blackberry, layered with notes of cedar, graphite and subtle spice. On the palate the wine is balanced and structured, with fresh dark fruit supported by fine tannins and lively acidity. The finish is long and precise, with the classic elegance expected from Saint Julien. Large format This 300cl double magnum offers excellent ageing potential. The wines of Saint Julien are well known for maturing gracefully, gaining complexity and refinement with time. In large formats the wine evolves more slowly, allowing the structure and aromatics to develop gradually over many years. Drinking window 2027 to 2045 A classic Saint Julien from a historic estate, Château Langoa Barton 2021 in double magnum is an excellent option for collectors seeking a traditional Médoc wine with both ageing potential and approachability.

Chateau Cissac, Haut-Medoc 2023 12x75cl

Chateau Cissac 2023 is an beautifully made Cru Bourgeoise claret with commendable reviews from the critics and released at only £8.00 per bottle in bond. With a large and loyal following in the UK... it is a wine we should all be buying this year – it is one of the bargains of the vintage ‘good aromatic length, very appealing finish, a very elegant and classic Cissac style’ Markus Del Monego MW ‘A good vintage at this estate’ Jane Anson Intense purple colour with violet hue. Very elegant and expressive nose, very pure fruit, blackcurrants and blackberries, hints of raspberries in the background and discreet toasting. A whiff of vanilla and discreet floral hints in the background. On the palate well-structured with balanced tannins, good aromatic length, very appealing finish, a very elegant and classic Cissac style, however interpreted in a contemporary way. 92 Points Markus Del Monego MW A good vintage at this estate, with vibrant red cherry and damson fruit, a good dollop of black pepper spice and fresh floral aromatics. It's a little austere but it's juicy and has sinewy tannins that suggest ageing ability. A success, with personality and a pretty feel. Owner Marie Vialard. 91 Points Jane Anson With vines near the Gironde Estuary far north in the Médoc, a textbook example of success from cooler Left Bank terroir in this vintage, with bright and brambly cassis and plum, delivered in a straightforward fashion. I like the mid-palate concentration and depth, although the finish is marked by somewhat strict tannins. In this case, barrel ageing in 25% new oak should smoothe such edges. 91 Points Decanter

La Chapelle de la Mission Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan 2023 6x75cl

The solid center-palate and sure nature says La Mission, as it should, being the second wine of the estate. Medium body with a creamy and refined tannin structure that is long and true. Oyster-shell... and blackcurrant character, as well as crushed stones. Direct. 48.3% merlot, 39.4% cabernet sauvignon and 12.3% cabernet franc. 95-96 James Suckling The 2023 La Chapelle De La Mission Haut-Brion showed beautifully, with a ripe, round, supple, sexy style. Black raspberries, liquid violets, spicy wood, and tobacco are just some of the nuances in this beauty, and it has a classic La Mission supple, round, opulent style that has so much to love. 91-94 Jeb Dunnuck Deep ruby colour, makes an immediate impression with its elegant, uplifted tannic grip delivering careful construction of red roses, blueberry and black cherry fruit, grilled spices and understated energy. Will need a good few years in bottle before fully softening, but full of joy. 93 Points Jane Anson
