Description

Château Meyney 2020 is a well regarded Saint Estèphe from one of the appellation’s most consistent estates, located on gravel and clay soils overlooking the Gironde estuary. The vineyard is planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Merlot and Petit Verdot, producing wines with depth, structure and classic Médoc character.

The 2020 vintage is a strong year in Bordeaux, delivering wines with both concentration and balance. At Château Meyney this results in a wine that combines ripe fruit with freshness and a firm structural backbone, reflecting the character of Saint Estèphe.

Tasting notes

Château Meyney 2020 shows aromas of cassis, blackberry and dark cherry, with notes of cedar, graphite and a touch of spice.

On the palate the wine is structured and well balanced, with concentrated dark fruit supported by firm but refined tannins. There is a sense of both power and control, leading to a long and persistent finish with a savoury edge.

A classic Saint Estèphe that combines depth and structure with precision, offering both immediate appeal and strong ageing potential.

Chateau Meyney, Saint-Estephe 2022 6x75cl

JA95
Château Meyney 2022 (organic) is “the insider’s St Estephe” says Jane Anson, who scored it an incredible 95 points, saying "it’s definitely one to look out for... a great example of... Meyney... A buy”. “Pure and taut, it is a strong effort ...” William Kelley. “Impressive concentration” James Suckling Meyney is ideally positioned next door to Montrose (which it is often mistaken for in blind tastings). Blessed with a wonderful terroir in close proximity to the Gironde River and its cooling influence, which was undoubtedly one of the keys to the estate’s success in this warm, dry vintage. In recent vintages, under the direction of Anne Le Naour and with Hubert de Boüard as consultant, the estate has been on a steep upward trajectory. Famed for the high proportion and quality of its Petit Verdot in the blend, which adds a wonderfully lively top note of violets in 2022. We were all impressed by the beautifully ripe core of dark fruit and the ripeness of the tannins that reveal the sweetness and finesse of a fine vintage. Unashamedly Saint-Estèphe with that slight savoury, iodine/mussel shell touch, delicious and a bargain. Truly an estate that is punching well above its price point! Château Meyney 2022, despite its modest price possesses the structure for relatively long-term cellaring. This is a must-buy! “A vineyard that should perform strongly in this kind of vintage, because located right next to the river for air conditioning, with a mix of gravel with clear clay sections to retain freshness, and it's definitely one to look out for. Layers of redcurrant, raspberry and blackcurrant fruits, juicy mouthwatering finish, peony, pencil lead, orange peel, 3.75ph. Certainly this is a great example of Meyney. Hubert de Boüard consultant. A buy.” 95 points, Jane Anson Impressive concentration here with compact tannin structure. Medium- to full-bodied. Firm and steady with a long, velvety finish. Minerally and crunchy. 94-95 points James Suckling Opening in the glass with aromas of sweet dark berries, licorice and petals, the 2022 Meyney is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit girdled by sweet but firm tannins. Pure and taut, it is a strong effort that will require a bit of patience. 91-93 points William Kelley

Chateau Fourcas Dupre 2020 150cl

Château Fourcas Dupré 2020, Listrac Médoc – Magnum Château Fourcas Dupré is a well regarded estate in the Listrac Médoc, with a history dating back to the early nineteenth century. The... vineyards are planted on a mix of gravel, sand and limestone soils, well suited to Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, producing wines that combine structure with approachability. The blend is typically led by Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot and a smaller proportion of Cabernet Franc, giving the wine both depth and aromatic complexity. The 2020 vintage in Bordeaux produced wines with excellent ripeness and balance, and at Fourcas Dupré this is reflected in a wine that shows both generosity and freshness. Tasting notes Château Fourcas Dupré 2020 shows vibrant aromas of dark cherry and blackberry, with a touch of oak adding subtle spice and complexity. On the palate the wine is medium bodied and structured, with a firm core of fruit and a slightly chewy texture. Sweet red fruits are supported by fine tannins, with notes of mint and cocoa adding a savoury edge on the finish. The balance between freshness and ripeness gives the wine both immediate appeal and ageing potential. Critic scores 91 points, Jeff Leve Large format In magnum, the wine will age more slowly, allowing the fruit and structure to integrate gradually while preserving freshness over time. Drinking window 2024 to 2038 A well made Listrac Médoc offering classic Left Bank character and excellent value in large format.

Chateau Les Carmes Haut-Brion, Pessac-Leognan 2023 6x75cl

Château Carmes Haut Brion 2023 has been released and is ‘a fantastic wine’. The Château is tiny with under 8 hectares of vines and over the last 5+ years has become the new Bordeaux superstar... with everyone fighting for allocations and the wine selling out immediately. This was a Château we had to visit in April - we were all enthralled by how good the wine was with whole bunch pressed grapes and 50% Cabernet Franc in the blend – it is a wine you cannot find fault with - perfection. It is also great value at 31% less than last year. If you could only buy one this year this would probably be it - read the critics reviews!. It is also a top investment grade wine on which we all make money if we are lucky enough to be offered an allocation. "This is a fantastic wine and very, very exciting, with purity and brightness to the floral, spicy and blackberry notes. It’s full and deep with agility and weightless. You feel the greatness in this. The winemaker says this is more concentrated and structured than the 2022. Lightly salty. 60% whole-berry fermentation. 50% cabernet franc, 30% cabernet sauvignon and 20% merlot. From organically grown grapes." 98-99 points, James Suckling "Guillaume Pouthier and his team have once again crafted one of Bordeaux's most unique and characterful wines. Revealing aromas of mulberries and raspberries mingled with notions of vine smoke, orange zest, rose petals and spices, the 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is medium to full-bodied, fleshy and concentrated, with a powerful, vibrant and complete mid-palate, concluding with a long, ethereal and mouthwateringly saline finish. Sensual, suave and seamless, its beautifully refined tannins are, analytically, more abundant than even those of the 2022 vintage, yet they are so brilliantly integrated as to be near-imperceptible. This blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 20% Merlot is crafted for longevity, though its refined structure will make it surprisingly approachable at an early age. It's maturing 70% in new oak barrels, 20% in 18-hectoliter foudres and 10% in amphorae. A creditable yield of 50 hectoliters per hectare represents a decided agronomic success in what was a challenging growing season." 97-99 points, Yohan Castaing, Wine Advocate "A blend of 50% Cabernet Franc, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 20% Merlot, Les Carmes Haut-Brion 2023 has a pH of 3.62. It was fermented with 60% whole bunches and it is aging in 70% new oak barrels, 20% new oak vats of 18 hl, and 10% amphorae. It has an opaque purple-black color and needs a little swirling and coaxing to bring out fabulously pure, well-defined notes of juicy black cherries, blackcurrant pastilles, ripe juicy blackberries, and licorice, leading to hints of tar, peonies, wet slate, and black olives, with a touch of Sichuan pepper. The light to medium-bodied palate is airy and refreshing, with a solid backbone of very fine-grained, prancing tannins and bold freshness supporting the pristine black fruit flavors, finishing long and minerally. I had to spend a good 15 minutes with this wine to allow it to grow: it is incredibly tight to begin but expands to become something powerful. A beguiling 2023 with fully ripe black fruit characters and a paradoxical airiness, it really makes your head spin in the best possible way!" 96-98 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW "Always a unique take on the vintage, the Carmes at this stage still shows the personality of wholebunch but it is very well integrated this year. Deep ruby in colour with blueberry, blackberry and a hint of white pepper on the nose, there is a delicate hint of szechuan spice and wood smoke. The palate is chalky, with a lick of that same sweet exotic spice set against deeply mineral fruit. Layers of blueberry, dark cherry and blackcurrant interlock with the notes of rosemary, graphite and peppercorns that define this wine. Another stellar effort, this is long, structured and yet always fleet-footed. Excellent." 95-98 points, Thomas Parker MW "The 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion was picked September 11 to 25 with 60% whole bunch and more Cabernet Franc than usual. Aging was 70% in new barrels, 20% in 18-hectoliter foudres and 10% in amphorae. This offers plenty of dark berry fruit mixed with cedar and pinecones on the nose, very well defined and focused. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins, and the acidity is very well-judged. Just a soupçon of white pepper appears toward the finish. This is a much more succinct Les Carmes than the 2022, but it’s extremely harmonious and characterful." 94-96 points, Neal Martin "Elderflower and peony aromatics, stunning inky plum colour that is very much a signature of Carmes, where it looks so enticing and ripe visually, and then on the palate you feel this constrasting vibrant lift and drinkablity. Back to the signature squid ink flavour that is the key marker of ripe Cabernet in the vintage, and here the grippy slate texture slows everything slows, slowly humming through the palate. Has a sappy, drinkablity, with crushed rose petals and salted cracker salinity. 60% whole cluster, harvest September 11 to 25. 3.6ph. Distinctive, intense, one for Carmes lovers to celebrate." 96 points, Jane Anson "The 2023 Les Carmes Haut-Brion is increasingly a wine of seamlessness. Whereas the various components were once easily discernible, today Carmes is most often a wine of total beauty. The 2023 is a bit shy, especially in its aromatics. In other words, a pretty big departure from so many other recent vintages that have been far showier at this stage. Technical Director Guillaume Pouthier explains that he plans to give the 2023 longer aging, around 24-26 months, so he approached vinification and the early part of aging in a more reductive style than in the past. As always, Les Carmes is marked by its strong presence of Cabernet Franc and use of whole clusters, but as mentioned above, those signatures are less immediately evident than they once were. Les Carmes has been one of Bordeaux's stars over the last few years. I can't wait to see how the 2023 turns out. 2035-2073" 94-96 points, Antonio Galloni

Chateau Poujeaux, Moulis en Medoc 2016 3x150cl

From a brilliant claret vintage, Château Poujeaux 2016 unfolds a complex and expressive bouquet. Ripe black fruits such as cherries, blueberries, and blackcurrants take center stage, interwoven with... enticing hints of jamminess. As the wine breathes, a captivating floral dimension emerges, revealing delicate notes of lily and violet. The palate is greeted by a full-bodied and beautifully balanced expression. The initial burst of black fruit flavors intensifies, complemented by a touch of Morello cherry. Hints of earth and spice add further complexity, while the smooth, silky tannins provide a delightful textural element. The finish is long and lingering, leaving a lasting impression.

Le Dome, Saint-Emilion 2020

A true cult wine of Saint-Émilion, Le Dôme 2020 is the flagship of Jonathan Maltus’s portfolio, showcasing the purity and power of Cabernet Franc at its finest. Produced in tiny quantities from a... single vineyard on the slopes of the plateau, it captures both elegance and intensity in equal measure. "This iconic wine comes from a single vineyard on the slopes of the Saint-Emilion plateau. Mainly Cabernet Franc, the wine is beautifully perfumed with structure and tannins in harmony alongside black fruits. Still young, the wine is sure to age. Drink from 2026." 98 Points Wine Enthusiast "The 2020 Le Dome is a blend of 80% Cabernet Franc and 20% Merlot with an alcohol of 13.9% and a pH of 3.69. The Merlot was harvested on September 29th, with the Cabernet Franc on October 8th and 9th. It is being aged in 80% new French oak barrels. Deep garnet-purple in color, it comes storming out of the glass with thunderous scents of stewed plums, blueberry preserves and chocolate-covered cherries, followed by impactful, fragrant notions of rose oil, ground cloves, eucalyptus and pencil shavings. The palate is jaw-droppingly elegant, considering the power of the nose, featuring elegantly crafted black and red fruit layers with very ripe, finely grained tannins and tons of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Le Dome is from the JCP Maltus portfolio of skillfully crafted Saint-Émilion wines. Neil White is the head winemaker and Thomas Duclos is a consultant here." 97-99 Points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown, The Wine Advocate
