Description

Château Meyney 2022 (organic) is “the insider’s St Estephe” says Jane Anson, who scored it an incredible 95 points, saying “it’s definitely one to look out for… a great example of Meyney… A buy”.

“Pure and taut, it is a strong effort …” William Kelley. “Impressive concentration” James Suckling

Meyney is ideally positioned next door to Montrose (which it is often mistaken for in blind tastings). Blessed with a wonderful terroir in close proximity to the Gironde River and its cooling influence, which was undoubtedly one of the keys to the estate’s success in this warm, dry vintage.

In recent vintages, under the direction of Anne Le Naour and with Hubert de Boüard as consultant, the estate has been on a steep upward trajectory. Famed for the high proportion and quality of its Petit Verdot in the blend, which adds a wonderfully lively top note of violets in 2022. We were all impressed by the beautifully ripe core of dark fruit and the ripeness of the tannins that reveal the sweetness and finesse of a fine vintage. Unashamedly Saint-Estèphe with that slight savoury, iodine/mussel shell touch, delicious and a bargain.

Truly an estate that is punching well above its price point! Château Meyney 2022, despite its modest price possesses the structure for relatively long-term cellaring. This is a must-buy!

“A vineyard that should perform strongly in this kind of vintage, because located right next to the river for air conditioning, with a mix of gravel with clear clay sections to retain freshness, and it’s definitely one to look out for. Layers of redcurrant, raspberry and blackcurrant fruits, juicy mouthwatering finish, peony, pencil lead, orange peel, 3.75ph. Certainly this is a great example of Meyney. Hubert de Boüard consultant. A buy.” 95 points, Jane Anson

Impressive concentration here with compact tannin structure. Medium- to full-bodied. Firm and steady with a long, velvety finish. Minerally and crunchy. 94-95 points James Suckling

Opening in the glass with aromas of sweet dark berries, licorice and petals, the 2022 Meyney is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit girdled by sweet but firm tannins. Pure and taut, it is a strong effort that will require a bit of patience. 91-93 points William Kelley

Chateau Meyney, Saint-Estephe 2020 300cl

Château Meyney 2020 is a well regarded Saint Estèphe from one of the appellation’s most consistent estates, located on gravel and clay soils overlooking the Gironde estuary. The vineyard is... planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon alongside Merlot and Petit Verdot, producing wines with depth, structure and classic Médoc character. The 2020 vintage is a strong year in Bordeaux, delivering wines with both concentration and balance. At Château Meyney this results in a wine that combines ripe fruit with freshness and a firm structural backbone, reflecting the character of Saint Estèphe. Tasting notes Château Meyney 2020 shows aromas of cassis, blackberry and dark cherry, with notes of cedar, graphite and a touch of spice. On the palate the wine is structured and well balanced, with concentrated dark fruit supported by firm but refined tannins. There is a sense of both power and control, leading to a long and persistent finish with a savoury edge. A classic Saint Estèphe that combines depth and structure with precision, offering both immediate appeal and strong ageing potential.

Carruades de Lafite, Pauillac 2023 3x75cl

Carruades , one of the most sought-after wines every year has just been released. It is the second wine of Ch Lafite Rothschild, and has been released at £930.00 per 6x75cl, a price reduction of... 19% on the 2022 vintage. It is one of the best recent vintages of Carruades and at this price it will be one of the top performers among the 2023’s you buy. Simply put -it is investment Gold Dust, largely due to its particularly strong following in the Asian market. Carruades is in reality much more than you could ask of a second wine, with its own personality, yet made providing a glimpse of what makes Lafite the global success which it is. 2023 sees the inclusion of grapes from the ‘Caudeyrac’ plot, a prominent portion of the Lafite plateau, which has given Carruades a more Pauillac personality than ever before this year. "A savory and juicy Carruades with softness and notes of ripe berry, cedar and dried tobacco. Like Lafite from the 1980s but more precise. Round and pretty. It really grows on the finish with such sweetness of fruit and length. Pointed, fine tannins at the end. Very long. A blend of 60% cabernet sauvignon and 40% merlot." 95-96 points, James Suckling "Medium intensity ruby, fairly austere right now, structured, with the same mint leaf and ink quality as Lafite. The sweet brambled black fruits only come in through the mid palate, this is well paced, unrolls slowly, a serious and concentrated Carruades that has its eye on the future. 12% pres wine, harvest September 7 to 29, unusually only using Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend." 94 points, Jane Anson "The 2023 Carruades de Lafite is a very pretty, sensual wine that very much captures the personality of the Grand Vin, naturally in a more approachable style. The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with no Franc or Petit Verdot. I have to say, there is something very direct about the 2023—something frank that is really evident. I admire its purity. Succulent red plum, spice, cedar, tobacco and a lifting touch of white pepper open first, while beautifully persistent saline undertones extend the finish." 92-94 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous "The 2023 Carruades de Lafite is deep garnet-purple in color. After a swirl or two, a beautiful perfume of rose oil and lavender is released, opening out to a classic core of cassis, fresh plums, and pencil lead with a touch of red, iron-rich soil. The light to medium-bodied palate is delicately styled, with compelling vibrancy and nice, ripe, fine-grained tannins supporting the black fruits, finishing long and fragrant. This is very pretty! The blend is 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot, with pH 3.70. The alcohol is 13.2%." 92-94 points, Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW "The 2023 Carruades de Lafite is notable for some of the Cabernet being picked prior to the Merlot, between September 7 and 29. This year, there is no Cabernet Franc or Petit Verdot in the blend. It has a far superior bouquet to some of the vintages I was tasting a decade or so ago—much more purity and precision, with notes of black plum, wild strawberry and a touch of cassis. The palate is medium-bodied with a silky texture and a crisp line of acidity. It’s fresh, precise and saline, with a long tail on the finish. This is surely one of the best Carruades I have tasted at this stage." 91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

Chateau Langoa Barton 3eme Cru Classe, Saint-Julien 2021 3x150cl

Château Langoa Barton is a historic Third Growth estate in Saint Julien, owned by the Barton family since the early nineteenth century. The vineyard sits on classic gravel soils well suited to... The 2021 vintage is a more classical Bordeaux year, where careful vineyard management has produced wines with freshness and precision. At Langoa Barton the result is a wine that reflects the consistency of the estate, showing balance and clarity rather than overt power. Tasting notes Château Langoa Barton 2021 shows aromas of cassis, red plum and blackberry, layered with notes of cedar, graphite and subtle spice. On the palate the wine is refined and structured, with fresh dark fruit supported by fine tannins and lively acidity. The finish is long and precise, highlighting the classical style of Saint Julien. Chateau Potensac, Medoc 2023 12x75cl

“Beautiful dark fruit with purity and freshness. Medium- to full-bodied, seamless and compact. Outstanding quality of tannins, so fine and dense. It’s muscular and taut on the mid-palate.... Lingering, too. Plenty of energy. Close to 2022.” 93-94 Points James Suckling “The 2023 Potensac is a seriously beautiful wine that shows just how complex and nuanced wines from this property can be. Crushed flowers, spice, red/purplish fruit, rose petal and mint are some of the notes that lift from the glass. Bright saline tones underpin the mid-palate and finish. This is one of the most complete young Potensacs I can recall tasting.” 91-93 Points Antonio Galloni “The 2023 Potensac has a well-defined nose: predominantly black fruit, with touches of seaweed in the background. I warm to it more with acquaintance, and it gradually coheres. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a fine line of acidity. Silky-smooth in texture, you can tell that there is some quality new oak on the finish, which is simpatico with the fruit. It's a good, solid Potensac that will require three or four years in bottle.” 90-92 Points Neal Martin
