Description

One of our most popular releases annually and a firm UK favourite from Saint-Julien, Château Talbot is in our opinion one of the best value left bank clarets. This 2023 has surpassed all expectations and is offered on the UK market this morning 20.1% down on last year’s 2022. This is a classical style Claret which is absolutely gorgeous, it will last for many years to come and as Neal Martin says, may even be better than the 2022, we concur after tasting in Bordeaux.

“A medium- to full-bodied red with very fine tannins. It’s firm and structured, showing a bright, dark-fruited character. Focused, with a good center-palate and a lingering finish. Really polished.” 94-95 points, James Suckling
“More proof that Talbot is on a roll, revved up and ready to take off. This is a brilliantly juicy but understated Talbot, lovely quality, classically-minded with cassis, blueberry, mint leaf, cocoa bean, espresso and powerful grilled fennel. Great stuff. 60% new oak for ageing, and a generous 54hl/ha yield.” 94 points, Jane Anson
“The 2023 Talbot is another strong wine for this re-emerging estate. Powerful, deep and impressively resonant, the 2023 is striking. Dark-toned fruit, new leather, lavender and dried herbs build over time. There’s terrific depth and intensity here, with fine balance to match. This is a superb showing from Talbot and the team led by Estate Director Jean-Michel Laporte. Drink 2030-2053.” 93-95 points, Antonio Galloni, Vinous
“Offering up aromas of dark berries, baking chocolate, plums, espresso roast and crushed mint, the 2023 Talbot is medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy, with a rich but lively core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, penetrating finish. Harvested over the course of fully four weeks, it’s a blend of 77% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot that attained 13% alcohol.” 92-94 points, William Kelley, Wine Advocate
“The 2023 Talbot contains the highest proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon to date, at 77%. It was picked from September 13 to October 6 at 54hL/ha according to winemaker Jean-Michel Laporte. Matured in 60% new oak, this has a fragrant bouquet that, like one or two fellow Saint-Julien wines, discretely unfolds in the glass. Quite precise with blackberry, cedar and light pencil box scents, there is a Pauillac-like tincture here. The palate is medium-bodied with finely chiseled, grainy tannins. It’s overtly classic in style, albeit with more mid-weight depth compared to some vintages of Talbot. Displaying fine cohesion and sapidity, this fans out on the finish, with a deft touch of white pepper livening things up. This is a very promising Talbot, and I may actually prefer it to the previous vintage.” 91-93 points, Neal Martin, Vinous

Chateau Beaumont, Haut-Medoc 2022 3x150cl

Château Beaumont 2022 is a classic Cru Bourgeois from the Haut Médoc, produced from vineyards located between Margaux and Saint Julien on well drained gravel soils. The estate is known for its... consistency and traditional style, offering a reliable expression of Left Bank Bordeaux. The 2022 vintage is a warm and successful year, producing wines with ripe fruit and generous texture, while retaining balance. At Château Beaumont this results in a wine that combines richness with freshness, showing more depth and polish than in cooler vintages. Tasting notes Château Beaumont 2022 shows aromas of cassis, blackberry and plum, with notes of spice, cedar and a touch of cocoa. On the palate the wine is medium to full bodied, with ripe fruit and velvety tannins giving a smooth and rounded texture. There is good depth through the mid palate, balanced by freshness and a light spice on the finish. Critic scores 92 points, Jane Anson 90–92 points, Neal Martin, Vinous 90–91 points, James Suckling Large format In magnum, the wine will age more gradually, allowing the fruit and tannins to integrate while preserving the freshness of the vintage. Drinking window 2026 to 2038 A generous and well balanced Haut Médoc that shows the richness of the 2022 vintage, with both immediate appeal and solid ageing potential in magnum.

Chateau d’Armailhac 5eme Cru Classe, Pauillac 2023 6x75cl

Château d’Armailhac is part of the Château Mouton Rothscild stable and is a wine we follow every year as it is always well priced and an excellent wine to invest in (see the table below), as well... as to add to your cellar. The 2023 vintage is no exception with price 15% down on the 2022 vintage and very favourable reviews from the critics. Ch. d'Armailhac blurs the lines between superb value for drinking and equally tremendous investment value: it would take pride of place in any cellar, whilst it should also quietly delivers returns to those who buy it. Please see Liv-ex graph below for the lower scored comparative 2015 vintage which is up 74% since it’s en primeur release price. Château d’Armailhac is not to be missed, everyone should add it to their holdings of fine wines. “There’s a powdery and open texture to this red. Full-bodied and layered with a pretty and weightless texture. Blackcurrants and blueberries and an orange-peel undertone. Velvety texture at the end. 70% cabernet sauvignon, 15% merlot, 13% cabernet franc and 2% petit verdot.” 96-97 points, James Suckling “Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 d'Armailhac sings of black raspberries, wild strawberries, and tilled soil with hints of dried herbs and wet slate. The medium-bodied palate is lively and elegantly styled, with plush tannins supporting delicate red and black fruit layers, culminating in a well-sustained finish. Very impressive! The blend is 70% Cabernet Sauvignon (the highest ever percentage for d'Armailhac), 15% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, with pH 3.75. The alcohol is 13.5%.” 93-95 Points Lisa Perrotti-Brown “High Cabernet, as is the story of the vintage on the Left Bank. A wine that also continues the new story of Armailhac following serious investment in vineyards and cellar, and technical director Lucie Lauilhé. Bright and vivid from the first moment, layered cassis, crushed mint, liqourice root, crushed rocks, an excellently precise, structured and textured Armailhac. Love it. Harvest September 7 to 30. 80ha in production, 50% new oak barrels for ageing.” 94 points, Jane Anson “The 2023 d'Armailhac is an attractive effort, bursting with aromas of cherries, raspberries, licorice and cigar wrapper. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and succulent, with a pretty core of fruit, sweet powdery tannins and lively acids, it's a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, 13% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot—which is a rather high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon for this address.” 91-93 Points, Neal Martin

Chateau Margaux Premier Cru Classe, Margaux 1990 150cl

Margaux 1990 speaks for itself. Extremely rare in magnum format with three 100 point reviews from very well respected critics. “It offers an extraordinary aromatic display of spring flowers,... camphor, sweet red and black fruits, a hint of liquorice…Round and generous … fresh with laser-like precision, this stunning wine is just beginning to reach its plateau of full maturity, where it should remain for another three decades. A sensational effort, it is one of the legendary wines made at Chateau Margaux”. 100 points Robert Parker, Wine Advocate, June 2009 “The 1990 Château Margaux is really beginning to hit its stride at age 31, … Full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, it's seamless and complete, … This is an especially dramatic, fleshy rendition of Margaux, yet it remains impeccably balanced and has decades of longevity ahead of it”. 100 points William Kelley, Wine Advocate, February 2022 The 1990 Chateau Margaux has turned into a sensational wine that eclipses both the 1988 and 1989...and then some… it is the kind of nose in which you just immerse yourself… The palate is soft and sensual with incredible depth… I feel that this 1990 Château Margaux is at its peak ... Magnificent”. 100 points Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, October 2016

Le Dragon de Quintus, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2020

Deeply impressive, Dragon de Quintus from the Haut-Brion stable is a full-bodied, generous wine full of juicy black and red berries, supported by soft tannins and lovely freshness and perfect spice.... It is balanced, harmonious, and the 2020 surpasses all expectations. A standout. "A soft, round red with blackberry, chocolate and hints of spice and cedar. It’s medium-bodied with silky tannins and a juicy finish." 92–93 points, James Suckling "Composed of 84.7% Merlot and 15.3% Cabernet Franc, while possessing an alcohol of 15.2%, the 2020 Le Dragon de Quintus has a deep garnet-purple color and notions of plum preserves, kirsch, black raspberries and cinnamon toast, plus hints of mossy tree bark and incense. The full-bodied palate is jam-packed with juicy black and red berries, supported by soft tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and spicy." 90–92 points, The Wine Advocate "Mid crimson with a pale rim. Light but warm, fully ripe impression on the nose. And a little marked acidity on the finish. The overall palate impression is not as rich as many of the 2020 St-Émilions I have been tasting, but then this is the first second wine I have tasted from the appellation in this vintage. Just a little stringy on the end." 16 points, Jancis Robinson
