Description

Domaine de la Pirolette is one of the benchmark estates of Saint Amour, the smallest and most northerly cru of Beaujolais. Run by Grégory and Virginie Barbet, the domaine sits on a hillside opposite the village church, with south facing vineyards that produce wines of both ripeness and aromatic lift.

The 2023 vintage shows a generous and expressive style, combining ripe fruit with freshness and balance, typical of well handled Beaujolais from this cru.

Tasting notes

Domaine de la Pirolette Saint Amour 2023 shows aromas of wild strawberry, cherry and blueberry, layered with notes of violet, liquorice and a touch of white pepper.

On the palate the wine is juicy and well structured, with ripe red fruit supported by soft tannins and a fresh, lifted finish. The balance between fruit and freshness gives the wine both immediate appeal and enough structure to develop over the short term.

A beautifully made cru Beaujolais that combines charm and complexity, offering excellent value and a clear expression of Saint Amour.

Chateau Alcee, Castillon-Cotes de Bordeaux 2021 12x75cl

Château Alcée 2021 is a refined Right Bank Bordeaux from Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux, an appellation just east of Saint Emilion increasingly recognised for producing high quality wines at... accessible levels. The vineyard is planted predominantly with Merlot alongside Cabernet Franc, grown on limestone and clay soils that bring both structure and freshness. The 2021 vintage is a more classical year, favouring balance, precision and drinkability over power. At Château Alcée this results in a wine that shows elegance and clarity, with a style that is approachable while still offering depth. Tasting notes Château Alcée 2021 shows aromas of black cherry, plum and red berry fruit, with notes of violet, spice and a touch of liquorice. On the palate the wine is medium bodied and well balanced, with fresh, juicy fruit supported by fine grained tannins. There is a subtle creaminess to the texture, with hints of chocolate and spice, leading to a clean and persistent finish with a touch of tension. Critic scores 91 points, Neal Martin, Vinous 91 points, James Suckling A polished and expressive Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux that combines freshness, balance and approachability, offering a modern Right Bank style with strong appeal.

Chateau Cissac, Haut-Medoc 2023 6x75cl

Chateau Cissac 2023 is an beautifully made Cru Bourgeoise claret with commendable reviews from the critics and released at only £8.00 per bottle in bond. With a large and loyal following in the UK... it is a wine we should all be buying this year – it is one of the bargains of the vintage ‘good aromatic length, very appealing finish, a very elegant and classic Cissac style’ Markus Del Monego MW ‘A good vintage at this estate’ Jane Anson Intense purple colour with violet hue. Very elegant and expressive nose, very pure fruit, blackcurrants and blackberries, hints of raspberries in the background and discreet toasting. A whiff of vanilla and discreet floral hints in the background. On the palate well-structured with balanced tannins, good aromatic length, very appealing finish, a very elegant and classic Cissac style, however interpreted in a contemporary way. 92 Points Markus Del Monego MW A good vintage at this estate, with vibrant red cherry and damson fruit, a good dollop of black pepper spice and fresh floral aromatics. It's a little austere but it's juicy and has sinewy tannins that suggest ageing ability. A success, with personality and a pretty feel. Owner Marie Vialard. 91 Points Jane Anson With vines near the Gironde Estuary far north in the Médoc, a textbook example of success from cooler Left Bank terroir in this vintage, with bright and brambly cassis and plum, delivered in a straightforward fashion. I like the mid-palate concentration and depth, although the finish is marked by somewhat strict tannins. In this case, barrel ageing in 25% new oak should smoothe such edges. 91 Points Decanter

Chateau Meyney, Saint-Estephe 2022 6x150cl

JA95
Château Meyney 2022 (organic) is “the insider’s St Estephe” says Jane Anson, who scored it an incredible 95 points, saying "it’s definitely one to look out for... a great example of... Meyney... A buy”. “Pure and taut, it is a strong effort ...” William Kelley. “Impressive concentration” James Suckling Meyney is ideally positioned next door to Montrose (which it is often mistaken for in blind tastings). Blessed with a wonderful terroir in close proximity to the Gironde River and its cooling influence, which was undoubtedly one of the keys to the estate’s success in this warm, dry vintage. In recent vintages, under the direction of Anne Le Naour and with Hubert de Boüard as consultant, the estate has been on a steep upward trajectory. Famed for the high proportion and quality of its Petit Verdot in the blend, which adds a wonderfully lively top note of violets in 2022. We were all impressed by the beautifully ripe core of dark fruit and the ripeness of the tannins that reveal the sweetness and finesse of a fine vintage. Unashamedly Saint-Estèphe with that slight savoury, iodine/mussel shell touch, delicious and a bargain. Truly an estate that is punching well above its price point! Château Meyney 2022, despite its modest price possesses the structure for relatively long-term cellaring. This is a must-buy!
