Description

A wonderful sweet wine from Chateau Coutet which along with Chateau Climens are the two greatest Chateau in Barsac which adjoins Sauternes with the same terroir – a wine of rare elegance that combines rare elegance, with the captivating sweetness of candied fruit with a mineral freshness that makes it an exceptional wine!

Perfect on its own or with Foie Gras, Blue cheese and fruit. In half bottles which fit perfectly in any fridge and a great bargain at this price

“Medium golden yellow, silver reflections. Ripe yellow tropical fruit, roasted pineapple, fresh apricots, candied orange zest, an inviting bouquet. Quite powerful, juicy, with a fine fruit sweetness, a discreet acidity, honey on the finish, lingering, sweet apricots on the finish, good ageing potential.” 92 Points, Peter Moser Falstaff

Chateau Coutet Premier Cru Classe, Barsac 2020

Château Coutet Premier Cru Classé, Barsac 2020 is one of the benchmark sweet wines of Bordeaux and a leading name within the appellation. As a Premier Cru Classé, Coutet is widely regarded as... being in the very top tier of Bordeaux sweet wines, standing comfortably alongside estates such as Château Rieussec in terms of quality, consistency and ageing potential. The 2020 vintage captures the estate at a particularly high level. The wine offers depth and concentration without heaviness, combining ripe botrytised fruit with the natural freshness that defines great Barsac. Aromas of honeyed apricot, quince and citrus peel lead into a layered palate of candied orange, stone fruit and subtle spice, all lifted by vibrant acidity. This balance between richness and precision is the hallmark of Château Coutet. In 75cl format, this is the classic expression of the wine and the ideal choice for cellaring. The structure and concentration of the 2020 suggest a long and graceful evolution ahead, with the wine set to gain complexity and nuance over many decades in bottle. Wonderful now though and can be kept in the fridge for a week after opening. An outstanding partner to foie gras, blue cheeses or refined desserts, but equally compelling enjoyed on its own. This is a serious, age worthy Barsac and a clear illustration of why Château Coutet remains one of the finest sweet wine producers in Bordeaux.

Chateau Coutet Premier Cru Classe, Barsac 2019 12×37.5cl

Bouquet with scents of dried honey, honeysuckle, and orange pith. The palate is honeyed with underlying acidity, adding zestiness and a persistent finish of orange rind and marmalade with notes of... pear, ginger, and exotic fruit. It is rated 94-96 by Neal Martin of Vinous (June 2020) and is recommended to be enjoyed from 2024 to 2055. It also has scores of 93 from Vinous and 92 from Wine Spectator. About Chateau Coutet: The estate, with a rich history dating back to the 13th century, is located in the Barsac appellation of the Sauternes region. It was one of the first vineyards in Sauternes, beginning wine production in 1643. The property was acknowledged by Thomas Jefferson as "the best Sauternes in Barsac." Owned by the Baly family since 1977, Chateau Coutet is known for its luscious and elegant Sauternes. The vineyards, covering 35 hectares, are planted predominantly with Sémillon, along with Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle. The unique terroir of the region, along with the influence of noble rot (botrytis cinerea), contributes to the distinctive sweet and concentrated flavor of the wine. 2019 Vintage in Sauternes: The 2019 vintage for Sauternes was characterized by ideal conditions for the development of botrytis, leading to richly concentrated sugar levels in the grapes. This resulted in naturally sweet wines with complex flavors. The vinification process involved multiple picking passes, with the first starting in early October, allowing for the selection of grapes with high potential alcohol content.

Chateau Coutet Premier Cru Classe, Barsac 2023 3x75cl

Chateau Coutet 2023. 1er Grand Cru Barsac comes from one of the finest Estates in Barsac/Sauternes and besides being modestly priced and delicious it also performs well as an investment grade wine... (see below) We tasted the 2023 at Mouton Rothschild last month – it was gorgeous with wonderful aromatics of summer fruits and a tough of spice. We all agreed that this will probably be the only Sauternes we will be offering – it was that good! "Beautiful aromatics, fresh acidity that picks things up from the first moment, crisp citrus, mango, pineapple, grated ginger, and a twist of bitter aniseed on the finish. Richly concentrated, reflecting small yields, but once again a wine that shows the huge potential of this style in the 2023 vintage. Harvest between September 20 and October 11." 96 points, Jane Anson "A Barsac with dried-apple, apricot and spice character. The botrytis comes through with a healthy and clean nature to it. Medium-bodied and medium-sweet with a spicy finish." 94-95 points, James Suckling "The 2023 Coutet is stellar. Soaring aromatics and bright acids drive through a core of lemon confit, apricot, mint, spice, passion fruit and pineapple. The interplay of deep, layered flavors and energy is so compelling. 2028-2048" 93-95 points, Antonio Galloni

Chateau Rieussec Premier Cru Classe, Sauternes 2017

A blend of 83% Semillon and 17% Sauvignon Blanc, the 2017 Rieussec is pale to medium lemon-gold colored. To begin, the nose blows you away with intense lemon tart, lime cordial, mango and quince... notes followed by a second wave of floral, orange blossoms and honeysuckle scents, and then notes of crushed rocks, crème caramel and marzipan join the party. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is still very tightly wound with concentrated sweetness and a racy backbone to match, delivering layer upon layer of citrus and savory flavors, finishing on a persistent mineral note. 2023 - 2057 97 points Lisa Perrotti-Brown MW, Wine Advocate Inspirational depth with botrytis spice, toffee, dried-apricot and sponge-cake character. Full-bodied, very sweet and lively with a long, endless finish. Lively acidity balances the wine. Tight and linear. Compact column of fruit and botrytis. Give it age. Better after 2026. 98 Points James Suckling Incredibly stylish, full-bodied and loaded with burnt orange notes, this is an amazingly detailed wine and one of the finest vintages of Rieussec in recent years. 19+ points Mathew Jukes OWC in case of 6x75cl
