Alain Jaume, Cairanne, Les Travees 2023

Cairanne is one of the Southern Rhône’s rising stars, nestled among some of the region’s most celebrated villages. Sharing its sun-drenched terroir with nearby Rasteau, Gigondas, and... Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Cairanne offers exceptional value for lovers of classic Grenache-led blends. Les Travées from Alain Jaume highlights the appellation’s potential, with grapes grown on limestone-rich slopes at elevations up to 350 metres. This higher altitude adds freshness and structure to the wine, while the Mediterranean climate ensures full ripeness and depth of flavour. In the glass, it presents a deep garnet-red colour with expressive aromas of fresh red and black fruits. The palate is rich and fleshy, supported by well-integrated tannins. The finish is long and textured, showing classic notes of spice, menthol, and dark chocolate that echo the warmth and complexity of its Rhône Valley roots. Fermented and aged in concrete vats for 12 to 14 months, this vintage retains purity and precision. Drink now or cellar for up to six years.

Chateau de Beaucastel Hommage a Jacques Perrin, Chateauneuf-du-Pape 2020 300cl

Château de Beaucastel is one of the most historic estates of the Southern Rhône and has been owned by the Perrin family for several generations. The château is renowned for producing some of the... most age worthy wines of Châteauneuf du Pape, with vineyards planted on the famous galets roulés soils that help retain warmth and encourage full ripening of the grapes. Hommage à Jacques Perrin is the estate’s flagship cuvée, created in tribute to Jacques Perrin and produced only in the finest vintages. The wine is made predominantly from old vine Mourvèdre with smaller proportions of Grenache, Syrah and Counoise, giving the wine remarkable depth, structure and longevity. The 2020 vintage in Châteauneuf du Pape produced wines of excellent balance and concentration. At Beaucastel the result is a powerful yet refined wine that reflects both the pedigree of the estate and the character of the vintage. Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin 2020 tasting notes Château de Beaucastel Hommage à Jacques Perrin 2020 shows intense aromas of blackberry, black cherry and plum, layered with notes of spice, leather, garrigue and dark chocolate. On the palate the wine is rich and structured, with dense fruit supported by firm but refined tannins. The finish is long and complex, highlighting the depth and ageing potential of this exceptional cuvée. Large format This 300cl double magnum offers outstanding potential for long term cellaring. The great wines of Châteauneuf du Pape are known for developing remarkable complexity with age, and in large formats the wine matures more slowly, preserving freshness while allowing the layers of fruit, spice and savoury character to unfold gradually. Drinking window 2030 to 2060+ A rare large format of one of the Rhône Valley’s most iconic wines, highly sought after by collectors and ideal for extended ageing.

Michael Chapoutier Alchemy La Combe Pilate, Viognier, Chapoutier 2019

Viognier is the Rhone's most famous white grape variety for which it is justifiably famous and Micheal Chapoutier's biodynamic Alchemy is a superb example. Jeb Dunnock, the region's best known critic... described it as "a mini Condrieu..but not so mini” Micheal Chapoutier, best known for his iconic Hermitages, the visionary wine maker of the Northern Rhone bought this tiny vineyard, no bigger than most of our gardens, some 5 years ago. The plot is right next to his house and is the first plot he turned biodynamic, hence the label. Chapoutier personally makes the wine by gently pressing whole bunches of grapes and leaving the juice on the lees (the skins) for a few days. The result is a dry, very fresh, full bodied viognier with hints of ripe peaches and orange blossom and a gorgeous flinty minerality and a savory finish. For those of us who appreciate good viognier, this is a must buy – delicious on its own but if anything it is a food wine – from oysters and dover sole to mildly spicy dishes and all white meats. You will not be disappointed.

Paul Jaboulet Aine, Crozes-Hermitage, Domaine de Thalabert 2023 6x75cl

One of the great bargains of the Northern Rhône at just £20 per bottle In Bond. It ages beautifully and offers a generous drinking window from 2026 through to at least 2036. "A textural, velvety... and seductive Syrah, exhibiting dark cherries and dried herbs with roasted meat and peppercorns. It's medium-bodied, subtle and precise, showing fine tannins and a succulent character. Refined, with a long, lively finish. 94 Points, James Suckling "Due to the hailstorm in July, there are only a couple hundred cases of the 2023 Crozes-Hermitage Thalabert. It's not as concentrated as the 2022, but it has a beautiful, medium-bodied style, classic black raspberry and darker berry fruits, some spice, pepper and floral nuances, nicely integrated oak and ripe tannins. I think it will easily be an outstanding wine. 92-94 Points, Jeb Dunnuck "A classic drinking-now, steak-frites-ready Crozes from this leading Northern Rhône house, this pure Syrah is a highly drinkable mix of sinewy-supple tannin, dark raspberry and blackberry fruit and black pepper-seasoned black olive savouriness." 91 Points, David Williams, Decanter Alongside it, the 2024 Mule Blanche Blanc , Crozes Hermitage is another superb release. Produced from 95% Marsanne and 5% Roussanne, it offers remarkable freshness, precision and texture, making it one of the standout white wines of the appellation.
